Everything I discuss includes the DLC Left Behind as well.TLOU has been the talk of the video game world since its debut last June. I finally caved to the hype and bought it December for the PS3. My only regret is that I went six unnecessary months not experiencing this absolute masterpiece of a game. As a testament to how much I love this game, I’m currently on my 12th playthrough in 6 months. I have pile of neglected titles waiting to be played, but I find myself returning to this world over and over again.A word of warning: This game is not for the faint of heart or those sensitive to grittier elements in video games. There’s a lot of violence, death, blood, and language. While I found none of it to be gratuitous, it definitely is not for everyone. For those who never played:Gameplay: It’s different from a lot of games in the fact that the controls are what I would describe as less than precise. This design is intentional. You’re a middle-aged man struggling in a cruel world. You aren’t a Navy Seal or a super hero and the controls subtly add to that character element. I think it was a brilliant move by ND to give you an unsteady hand (which you can upgrade over time if it drives you crazy). It adds to the difficulty, the stress, and the realism. If you like running and gunning and taking down baddies like a boss, you’re going to struggle here.Replay value: 12th playthrough, enough said.Story/Characters: This is where the true magic is. The premise of the story is as old and worn and ‘unoriginal’ as anything out there. Pandemic outbreak, collapse of civilization, welcome to the nitty-gritty world of survival of the fittest. Honestly, how many times has that been done? Yet the story has stuck with me, or more appropriate, haunted me, long after I put down the controller. This is due to the outstanding talents of the writers, voice actors, and programmers that brought these characters to life. Joel and Ellie (and the rest) aren’t just fictional characters to me; I became emotionally invested in them over time. TLOU breathed new life into the horror/survival story done so many times before and I applaud them for it.Graphics: Stunning. The cinematics are amazing and actual gameplay footage is hardly a noticeable transition. The character animations are top-notch. However, what really stand out to me are the environments. The atmosphere of the post-apocalyptic world hasn’t been rendered so masterfully since Half-Life 2. Creepy scrawls on the wall, blood smears across the floor, newspaper clippings begging to be deciphered, abandoned corpses left to rot, homes quickly abandoned. The environments are complemented by the periodic optional conversations you can engage in about different elements of the area. Whether you’re explaining to Ellie why people would execute military officials or telling her about a dumb teen movie poster she’s wondering about, it adds another level of depth to the entire experience.Soundtrack: Perfect for the story. Gustavo Santaolalla has a fan for life. I listen to it all the time.Difficulty: Easy, Normal, Hard, Survivor, and Grounded.Personally, I think the best way to experience it is going straight to Survivor mode. It’s hard, it’s terrifying, you have no listening bonus, and you’re cowering for your life every moment. You’ll die a lot, so if you’re easily frustrated, back it down a difficulty setting. There’s no shame playing a game on a lower difficulty, despite what some gaming ‘elitists’ believe. For me, the challenge is what made it so engaging. If you’re not that type, play your way so you enjoy it more.Grounded mode is only for the truly dedicated. Its major frustration comes from the lack of checkpoints (respawn points, whatever you want to call them). The AI is meaner, you’ll die a lot, and then you’ll die more. It’s a sibling of Dark Souls in that regard. If you owned the PS3 version: It’s up to you whether it’s worth purchasing again. I think it’s well worth it.Differences (graphics): It is absolutely gorgeous. No joke, I stopped and stared at a worn, plastic sheet blowing in the wind, purely in awe of how good it looked. It was beautiful on the PS3; ramp it up on steroids on the PS4.New Additions from PS3: The biggest addition is a photo mode, which is awesome (and allows me to gawk further at the upgraded graphics). There are also some smaller elements, such as being to completely turn off the HUD or the aiming reticule on any difficulty. While not major changes, these subtle customization options really add to the experience.Lastly, the cinematic commentaries and the Grounded: Making the Last of Us Documentary were both fascinating. The documentary gave me an additional level of respect for this creation. The commentary from Troy Ashley, and Neil also changed the way I viewed some elements of the story, adding depth and causing me to notice extra details. I loved watching them.Left Behind DLC-awesome! Great additional story, despite its length. That’s $15 worth of content, so the actual game is $35.Tl;dr: Go buy it! Right now! Sell your kidney if you must! It’s the best video game I’ve ever played (I’ve got 19 years of gaming to my name), finally dethroning TLoZ: Ocarina of Time after 15 years of well-earned glory. Video games are an art (ahem, Mr. Ebert) and The Last of Us is a masterpiece. In my opinion, it is one of the best works of fiction of any entertainment medium.

If you own a PS4 and never played this game, GET IT, NOW!
On first impression, The Last of Us wasn't quite what I was expecting. I thought it would be primarily more of a pure shooter with an emotional storyline. The gameplay is actually similar to The Walking Dead games except you don't have the "choose your own adventure" style multiple-choices that affect the storyline like in TWD. The events of The Last of Us are going to occur regardless of what you choose. Your choices and how you approach situations won't change the story arc but, like many games, will determine how unscathed you emerge or how much of your resources you deplete or increase in the process. One thing I like about the resources in this game is that none are really optional. I played through the entire Watch Dogs story mode and barely used half of the items I acquired or could have crafted. That's not the case here. You will need EVERYTHING. That makes everything you find and collect that much more valuable. It also makes scavenging an absolute necessity and not merely a side activity or trophy booster. Speaking of trophies, it is very hard to accumulate trophies. I am very deep into the game and just earned my first trophy. I'm not taking any shortcuts either. I'm scavenging thoroughly, crafting everything possible and trying every manner possible to utilize my weapons and crafted items.Basically, like The Walking Dead, you play the protagonist, in this case a man named Joel, who is charged with escorting a young girl cross-country through zombie filled landscape. In addition to the zombies, (which vary in type and toughness) there are also human threats as well. Face it, when the apocalypse hits, many will be in kill or be killed mode. In many cases, the humans are a bigger threat than zombies. I won't divulge any more of the plot because unlike the inconsiderate folks who posted major spoiler headlines online and spoiled a major reveal for me, I don't believe in ruining anyone else's gaming experience through carelessness or idiocy. The play mechanics are pretty straightforward. Those expecting a run and gun shooter will need to take a deep breath and get ready for some forced patience. In fact, the first 30-40 minutes of the game were pretty dull to be honest. I thought it would be one of those lame games where all you did was press different buttons when prompted to progress, like in cut scenes. After a while, the action picks up and from that point, the excitement and suspense doesn't let up. When you're battling through hordes of zombies or rag tag militia, it does feel a lot like a shooter than an adventure game. However, even when the action intensifies, there are still certain situations where nothing but patience, caution and stealth tactics will get you through it. For instance, you can't rush into a room wielding a handgun and expect to defeat a group of the tougher infected (and trust me... As the game progresses, some of the more advanced zombies are outright very hard to kill brutes). Even if you're a crack shot, you're likely toast if you enter a situation with bad odds. You'll have to sneak up and stealth kill at least half, if not all of them. Several times, I avoided confrontation altogether and just snuck my way past them. If you get bored easily doing anything other than nonstop running and gunning, then you may not appreciate the game as much. The multiplayer (Factions) mode is pretty cool. You team up in groups of players and each group plays against each other for survival. It's kind of like a team death match with a survival twist. You can share resources and loot fallen opponents. For the most part, it's pretty balanced but if you are new to the game, like me, get ready for occasional growing pains. Just like the multiplayer of first person shooters, much more experienced players are never shy about showing off their skills. However, it does take a total team effort, so it's in the best interests of teammates to stick and work together. Also, despite the presence of better skilled players, it's nowhere near as frustrating as typical multiplayer shooters where you basically get smoked seconds after respawning. No cheap opportunities for campers, hackers or elite players to prey on new lesser skilled players here.Overall, I find the game to be extremely fun and enjoyable. I loved the Walking Dead games, so that aspect is familiar to me and the action can be every bit as adrenaline inducing as the best shooters. Although minor, the game is not without its issues. The most glaring of these is occasional funky camera glitches. There were several times when the character would be creeping along a ledge or some other precarious action and the camera would just go haywire and give an incredibly awkward view that left me unable to see the character. I had to guess where to go next, based on the previous movements, until the camera finally corrected itself. Hopefully, this will be corrected in a future patch along with a few other minor programming glitches. Another annoying flaw is the tendency of your traveling companions to constantly get in the way. Most of the time they are little to no help in battle but they occasionally lend a hand or even a much needed health kit. The second issue is that the multiplayer user interface is a bit confusing for first timers because you're dumped into a non-intuitive interface with no instructions on what to do. Once you get the hang of the menu, multiplayer is awesome. Lastly, although the graphics are awesome, some graphics, like water and particle effects in particular, remind you that this is still essentially a PS3 game with a slight graphics boost for the PS4. Water and dust particle effects aside, the remaining graphics look awesome. The entire game looks like a cut scene. The actual gameplay graphics are extremely realistic. So, is The Last of Us worth the hype? I think so. I've never played it on PS3 but if PS3 graphics and gameplay look and feel even moderately close to the PS4, I see why it is a smash hit. If you've never played the game, I absolutely recommend buying it. It may be a carry-over but it's still one of the year's best games for PS4. Absolutely engrossing and addictive.

A game which could easily sell as a movie of emotional mayhem, (and loads of ‘things’ to kill too)
I bought this game after reading many reviews, both good and bad, but most were good.It came, I slapped it in, finished loading and away I went.I was expecting one of those games where you shoot and kill everything that moves before it kills you … and in a big way it is. But there’s a lot more too it than your average slaughter anything that moves genre of games. You’re Joel, (most of the game anyway) and you’re a ‘delivery guy’ who takes ‘packages’ from A to B. A Postman Pat meets Resident Evil sort of thing. In this game your ‘package’ is a 14y/o girl named Ellie, (It’s not a spoiler as she’s on the front cover).Anyway, there’s something special about this ‘package’ and it’s imperative she gets to point ‘B’ in one piece, where she will be handed over to the ‘fireflies’That’s the game, in a nutshell. But playing this game through something I found rather special indeed. It’s starts gentle, edging you into what does what and how you can do it, then the proverbial poop really does hit the fan. This isn’t just a game where you fight infected people who want to rip out your throat and eat your liver raw, although there are what seems like thousands of those infected psychos, ‘Runners’ ‘Stalkers’ ‘Clickers’ and ‘Bloaters’ each one having different ways in which they want to rip you apart if they get their hands on you.The other enemies are other people, hunters, who run large sections of the cities and treat people like Joel and Ellie going through, (Tourist) as target practice. So to get through large swaths of streets and buildings you have to either fight or avoid these nutters too. And unlike the infected, who are quite ‘readable’ in their movements, the hunters move of their own free will.My first sitting I shot and tried to kill everything in sight, big man, big guns, big whatsits. But soon realised that, in many cases, stealth is much more effective than fire power, and, with limited ammo and other weapons, it’s sometimes best to creep about in the shadows. The weapons themselves are your basic survival weapons, there’s no laser guided nuclear warheads strapped to a motorbike helmet. You’ve simply got shotguns, browning, 6 shooter, hunting rifle etc. and a knife, let’s not forget the knife. The knife is important and will be used lots. You get ammo, along the way, ammo often comes from the people/infected you kill.Other weapons are available, but you have to collect things along the way to make these weapons, (as you would if you found yourself in such a scenario) Items are scattered everywhere, so keep your eyes out. Once you’ve collected certain items you make your weapons, and also your first aid kit to stay alive, (staying alive’s pretty useful). You meet help along the way and lose help along the way. There are moments where the game allows you to have a breather, playing a few seconds of a movie, (which you can skip – but watch them first time round as they really do add to the thrill of the game) There’s one ‘movie’ where a budding friendship for Joel and Ellie suddenly ends in a brutal fashion.Anyway, I think I’ve waffled enough about this game. I could say a lot more as there’s a lot to say, I mean, if this was a movie, which, thanks to some remarkable work from the people at NaughtyDog, it very nearly is, I’d pay good money to watch it. If you watch out for the little things, the movements of Joel and Ellie. Simply expressions, quick, yet slight actions you’d expect to see in a movie, ie, Ellie’s actions actually mimicking a true teenage girl. Even brief moments when you know Joel is seeing his own daughter in Ellie. It’s little things like that that NaughtyDog have thought about, and it works exceptionally well.I apologise for the length of this writing but a game like this is hard to sum up in a nutshell. If you’re after a game that requires a few grey cells as well as the usual all out firepower to get to the end, and a story which will have you wanting to play on to the end, just to see what happens, then this is for you. Without a doubt you will enjoy playing it, more than once.
