A surprising, unexpected treat, as British B movie releases seem to have dried up of late.
A very pleasant surprise. It isn't the Third Man and not really noir, nor is it a B movie, as it has A list actors and technicians. The short running time suggests a double feature.Greco is good, but matched by Muriel Pavlow. I'd quite forgotten how lovely she was. She's supposed to be the plain next door kind of girl (like Barbara Bell Geddes to Kim Novak in 'Vertigo') but she beats Greco on a points decision. Sylvester, with the Kirk Douglas dimple in his chin, is chiseled and menacing and it's always good to see Marius Goring. The Captain of the barge reminded me of Christopher Plummer, but he didn't sing 'Edelweiss', thank goodness, and the cabin boy is lovely in his 50s knitwear and socks with open sandals.Nice Eastman colour from Geoffrey Unsworth, in an attractive travelogue way, but perhaps he delegated those touches to the second unit. Who ever was responsible, the documentary shots add immeasurably to the pleasure.I've always loved river and canal films, ever since L'Atalante, and this is a fine, if minor, addition to the genre.I just wish Strawberry Media stretched to subtitles as I'm sure their target audience is getting on and becoming a little hard of hearing. Will undoubtedly appeal to the usual suspects.
