fairly interesting but not a lot of new info
This is an interesting account of one man's relationship and experiences with Bobby Fischer in Iceland. There are interesting insights into Bobby but some of the writing is awkward, the time shifts can be confusing, and some passages are difficult to understand. In my opinion there's also far too much focus on the author in some chapters. I wanted to read about Bobby Fischer, not the author. This book clearly shows that Bobby Fischer was not the mad man as he was made out to be by the media. Yes, he had a temper and he spoke his mind, but he wasn't mentally ill. It left me feeling sorry for the life he had to endure due to political manipulations, specifically at the hands of the US government. A short book, but a fairly good read, although the price seems a bit steep considering that there's not a lot of really new information in it.

Wonderful Primary Source on the Final Years of Fischer’s Life
I loved this book. It’s interesting to get a perspective of Fischer from someone who spoke to him regularly after Fischer adopted his antisemitic and anti-American views. If you’re looking for a more comprehensive account of Fischer’s life, especially before the 1972 Workd Chess Championship match, I recommend Frank Brady’s book.

Must read for Fischer fans!
This excellently written book tells the side of Bobby that very few knew and explains much of his eccentric to erratic behaviors. There are many personal anecdotal stories that are simply amazing. This is a book for Fischer fans who know that he had serious problems, but are opened minded about his mental illness to know that his views were misguided and abrasive. Yet, he was never a danger to society and should never have been treated the way he was by the US government nor the Japanese.

Beautifully written, honest and emotionally moving
I grew up in awe of Bobby Fischer and the sport he inspired me to study. However, I found myself alienated and confused by the overly fantastic caricature presented of his later life. This book is eloquent and honest. From a very impressive and intelligent author we are presented Bobby Fischer the man. And I could not be more thankful for the opportunity.

Behind the Scenes
I was in high school when the Fischer craze hit. I stayed with the game, playing for my college in a couple of tournaments and on through the years. I enjoyed seeing the human side of Fischer. Yes he had his quirks, (who doesn't) but he was human too. If you followed Fischer, this is a must read to know how the story ends.

Great info about the last years of Bobby Fischer.

A tender trip on a rocky road
This is a great book by someone who tried to know and help Fisher, who it seems clear was 1) not treated fairly by the U.S. Government and 2) had real social problems and could not keep his fury in check.

Mainly for Fischer Addicts
This book primarily covers Fischer's life from his detention and imprisonment in Japan in 2004 until his death in Iceland in 2008. It is written by a member of the RJF committee that worked to have him accepted by the Icelandic government. The author takes a forgiving, almost idolizing tone towards his subject for much of the book. At times his take on official sanctions against Fischer seems to come directly from the man himself. After Bobby's death, there is more of an analytical approach and he becomes more candid about the great man's tragic flaws. There is little that is new or startling here for people who have followed Fischer's life. Nevertheless there are few people who enjoyed the access that Helgi Olafsson did, even if it wasn't always smooth sailing. Olafsson even admits that they had a falling out although he glosses over the details somewhat. At the time of Fischer's death, they weren't on speaking terms.Buy this book if you need to know everything about the man and are interested in the machinations surrounding the US sanctions imposed on Fischer after the 2nd match with Spassky. Don't get it expecting to learn much that you didn't already know if you're a fan or a follower. The writing is dry and uneven but quite readable and the book will only keep you occupied for a few hours.
