If you are on the fence, disregard my complaints and support Double Fine to ensure a sequel!!!
Basically, if you want my review in a nutshell, I think that if you are a fan of heavy metal, comedy, and video games, you have no excuse NOT to buy Brutal Legend. The characters, world, and soundtrack are ALL top notch and worth full price alone. This is because they are above and beyond what you will typically find in most video games, and pleasantly enough, much better than any Jack Black movie. So, expect to have laughed, headbanged, and stood in awe of the creative environments many times over before it is completed. That is why I loved it and the reason why I will recommend it to friends, not what is holding the game back. What really does, however, is the relatively short length and flawed gameplay. Maybe I have been spoiled by better action games but the regular fighting mechanics are not very tight or fun, just serviceable. The end result was desiring to finish these stages quickly with incredibly powerful guitar solos, rather than relish in the enemies' bloodshed during the heat of combat. Neither are the totally unexpected RTS portions of the game that amazing, because if you've never played the genre before, like me, they are not explained as well as they should be and you only get the hang of it by the last few battles. Of course, by then, it is fun enough that you will wish there was more because the game is only about 7-8 hours long, assuming you do a good portion of the side missions. Overall, though, this is a fantastic game with lots of potential to achieve greatness if a franchise is ever established, which should explain my title. The aforementioned problems can be fixed; the driving, which I have no problem with, could be made to be more twisted-metal-like; we could get more heavy metal stars like Dave Mustaine, Brendon Small, or Shagrath into the game; and maybe, just MAYBE, we can feature some Iron Maiden, Metallica, and Arch Enemy on the soundtrack. Opeth is unlikely but would also kick ass, and even if a sequel is more of the same it will still be good, since it seems like the world is rich enough to support many future adventures. The problem is, this didn't sell nearly as well as the developer had hoped and was left in the dust in favor of less original, more of the same sequels like Call of Duty and non-games like Wii Fit. We'll need to do all we can to change that, so buy this game new if you haven't, spread the word and hopefully we can make this into a cult hit.

Jack Black does it again! :)
I'm not a gamer, per se, so I'm not really qualified to comment on the particulars of the game. This was a gift for my husband, who was itching to get the full version after trying the demo. Suffice to say, the man is nuts for it. He LOVES it! He's even said it may be the best game he's ever played (as in, his "most favorite"; he may have played others that were technically better but, then, what do I know?). What's cool is that his non-gaming wife can sit in the same room while he plays it for hours on end. I love Jack Black so it's fun to watch and hear this character he's created. I'm also a fan of the music in the game's soundtrack. There's a good variety of rock to listen to, from hard to almost-hardest. Finally, I love that there's a lot of humor interjected into the story. I crack up over the gang of big guys who follow Jack's character around, constantly air-banging their heads! (I used to know some people who were alarmingly similar, which makes it all the funnier.) I would recommend it based on watching hubby have nonstop fun, as well as for having a storyline and style that makes it entertaining for onlookers. I'm also pleased to say that I had a flawless experience with the shipping; this was the first time I ever used 1-day ("overnight?") delivery and it arrived on time without a hitch.

bad azz
I play this game with my girlfriend and our boy(10) . It may be a little violent and the cursing is blatant, but you can bleep the cursing (Which adds to the fun)and you can turn off blood, which only adds to the myth that kids who see blood in video games will become blood thirsty,(so you know, I left it on!)I am not a fan of the upside-down pentagrams used as GPS mission checkpoints. All that being said, the game is amazing. The sound track is back to back classic heavy metal infused with the game fighting. The game itself looks like you are in a TOOL video mixed a little with Camelot lore and a little bit of Outlaw motorcycle madness. You have two weapons an ax and guitar. After a few hours the ax turn into mostly show, and the guitar is like a magic wand that uses solos to dispel monsters and baddies. There are boss-fights with platformer-game elements built in, but this is more like an open world adventure than like a Mario. There are also RTS elements, but will not give you anymore details, to prevent spoilers. There are several rock-star cameos. if you love heavy metal then you simply need to enjoy a game built for you. This game should not be missed by anyone. I purchased it for 20 dollars right here from amazon. I got plenty of value out of it. I hope there is a sequel, and would grab it up, even with a price north of 20 dollars.

Review from a non-metal fan
Let me preface this review by saying that I am not a huge fan of metal music nor of Jack Black. I listened to some Ozzy when I was growing up, and I think Jack Black is OK, but those weren't the reasons I bought this game. In fact, the first time I heard about this game, I had zero interest in it. However, playing the demo, reading some interviews with Tim Schafer, and seeing some of the art behind this game completely changed my mind. The Pros: The art in this game is fantastic - the world, the character design, the "legends" you uncover, even the user interface - are all a joy to encounter. I never got tired of finding a new viewpoint and watching the camera pan across some fantastic heavy metal landmark. And the various heavy metal demons they've thought up are brilliant. The story is top notch. The plot of the main quest, and especially the "legend" back story are really well done. The voice work is truly excellent. It really brings the characters to life. The humor - maybe I have the mind of a 13 year old, but the game made me laugh out loud several times and kept me with a constant mental grin. The music - even though I'm not a huge fan of the genre, it really fits the game world. The world continues - once you beat the game you can keep exploring or finish side missions you haven't yet completed. And there seems to be a bridge to nowhere - maybe a possible DLC single player continuation? I sure hope so. The Cons: The single player campaign is short. I don't think you are really enjoying it if you finish it in 6 hours like some are claiming, but I had about 3 really in-depth sittings before I finished it. The time you spend on the ground with your axe is even shorter. I enjoyed the first couple missions the most, where the game had you dungeon crawling a bit and defeating a boss enemy at the end. Gameplay shifts quickly to the troop directed stage battle mechanic, which I wasn't really expecting. The side missions are repetitive, and actually not all that numerous. I finished them all shortly after beating the game. Make sure you seek out the uniquely named side missions though - some of them are real gems. Other Thoughts: You will be doing a lot of driving around. Several of the missions involve racing your car or driving around and blasting things. I actually enjoyed this part of the game, but it does seem like you are constantly in the Deuce. The world is kind of small - it's not as expansive as say Fallout 3 or Oblivion. But I think it suits the game pretty well. You can shock just about any four legged creature and ride it - I don't think I really realized this until after I beat the game. I don't think it will particularly help you much during the game, but it's kinda fun =D After completing the game and exploring what I thought was pretty thoroughly, I've only completed about 40% Of the game according to my trophy score. I only discovered a little more than half of the bound serpents, and I find myself lacking the motivation to "complete" the scavenger hunting and the rest of the single player trophies. (How in the world can there possibly be that many things still left to find??) I'm not a huge fan of the RTS style stage battles (I know Tim Schafer claims it is NOT an RTS, but..) I haven't yet played a multiplayer stage battle and I'm not real enthusiastic about doing so, and that is a BIG part of the replay value. You'll probably enjoy the game a lot more if you like the stage battles, but I'm not sure what type of player they are aimed at. For hardcore RTS players I'm sure it's really simplistic, and for those of us who just prefer to hack and slash, it starts to become a chore. You may enjoy them, but it didn't float my boat. Overall this is still one of the best games I've played all year.

Look this is a game made by double fine. Need I say more? Alright, then this is a game that stars Jack Black so storyline happens to be pretty deep and wonderfully hysterical at times. Ohh yeah game play is a thing huh? Well it's great although you can't jump, which seems like a strange decision for a platformer, they make up for it by giving you a sick car that goes forever fast. The fighting seems to be simplistic hack and slash axe combos, but the solos you get to play from your guitar during battle add a fun touch and a lot of cool effects to the fight. Also what i didn't know before I bought the game is that it has a real time strategy fighting system thrown in to it, not in the way that it was a last minute decision, but a cool part of the game that i just hadn't expected to be part of the game. My only real issue with the game is it can be incredibly short, 8-10 hours if you don't do all the side quests and find everything, but if you've played Psychonauts before than this isn't anything new to you other than the best game. And yeah there happens to be a lot of the best games out there so this is one of them.

Well done!
I bought Brütal Legend for my wife as a Christmas present last month, and she's still playing it 5 hours a day! If you are a fan of heavy metal, you will love this game. If you are a fan of Jack Black, you will love this game. Heck, if you play this game you will BE Jack Black, because the main character IS Jack Black. Jack Black is Eddie Riggs, with bulging muscles and a manly cro-magnon brow-ridge. Is that why my wife loves this game so much? The entire world of this game is a Heavy Metal metaphor. The landscape is embedded with iron crosses, engine casings, guitar outcroppings, and smoking tailpipes. Your guitar kills. Literally. So does your axe. Steel-quilled porcupines and razorbacks on wheels roam the land, while Ozzy Osborne sells you upgrades for your mystical, hand-crafted, heavy-metal, motorized chariot with machine guns. Yes, Ozzy Osborne. He's even in the soundtrack. Did I mention over a hundred heavy metal tracks in the soundtrack? Brütal Legend definitely lives up to it's potential. The gameplay is smooth with a lot unique features. The controls are forgiving so you can concentrate on playing the game rather than mastering the controls. The only difficulty is during the big rock battles; you have to be very, VERY near your troops to get them to listen to your commands. This would be my favorite PS3 game if my wife would ever let me play it. The only game my wife likes better is God of War III, but it's a close call. She sighs and tells me that Eddie Riggs is almost as sexy as Kratos.

Really Fun
Let me start by saying that I am NOT a fan of Jack Black. At all. However, I do like heavy metal--and you cannot like heavy metal and NOT like this game. It's just not possible. It's clever, challenging and funny as hell. The only drawback is that it IS a fairly short game--but there are lots of mini-games to play to continue your character. And if you're a busy grown-up looking for a quick fix of nostalgic metal from your youth, a shorter game is probably preferable. The music is excellent, the graphics are acceptable (but the art concepts are fantastic!), and the story is just plain fun.

Another great Tim Shafer game.
Tim Shafer is like the Kevin Smith of video games. He makes great stuff, that fans will blindly pick up and try to tell everyone else that it is the best thing ever. Well I am one of those fans, but I will try to be as fair as possible. This game is unlike anything you have ever played. If you tried the demo, you will quickly find that it didn't represent the actual game very well. The demo was fun and gave the impression that you were playing an action/fighting game with heavy metal themes, driving, and the comedy of Jack Black. Well that is all fair, but they didn't show you the real-time strategy moments that dominate this game. You will take control of countless head banger in your quest. You will learn to command and lead your armies into battle, and honestly as someone who doesn't like RTS games, this game is so much fun. Of course anyone who has read any of my previous reviews know, I love metal, all metal, and Jack Black. So this game really speaks to me. There are a bunch of guest characters includin Lemmy from Motorhead, and Ozzy, plus a few more. The soundtrack is great, and the enemies will make you laugh if you lived through the 80's. The online is pure RTS with a metal theme. You build your hoard and try to destroy your enemy's stage. That's right, you are fighting to be the only team able to hold a concert. It is all done so well, that even the offline battles against the AI is fun. If you like Tenacious D, Jack Black, Heavy Metal, or anything by Tim Shafer, then you owe it to yourself to get this game. It is great quality, and will last you a long time.
