Worth every penny
I do a lot of research when I buy things, including reading reviews. I looked at this and the Tour SM and decided on this because it was actually much cheaper and I liked the colors. I have issues with my neck and shoulders, and day packs or one shoulder bags just aggravate. I returned the Drift version because it was too small to hold a bigger journal or book. I'm a petite woman, and I think the Tour Small would probably have fit me better, but I thought I could always cinch this larger bag down to a smaller size. I used this on three short hikes with a dog and I LOVE it. Extremely well designed, with pockets in the right places, especially a "hidden one in the front. It has more room than I would need for a short hike. It can hold more than I'd ever need unless on a long flight or hike. It also sits up when on the ground, which is nice. I had to cinch it quite a bit because it is designed for larger waists, but it worked. Super high-quality and thoughtful design. My one critique is that it is a little heavier and it has a neoprene sleeve that I didn't need. I'd almost make that removable if I designed the next version. I also love how easy it is to stow the lumbar straps so that it can just be a day bag. Hiking or walking with a dog and a kid and hands free is a game changer. I expect to use this as well while traveling. I wish I got this years ago.

Very good bag.
I also own a Drift and use it to carry - just the essentials. When I need to carry a lot more, the drift is used as part of a two-bag system, and it works great in that capacity. This brings me to the tour. It works well as the second bag in my configuration. It also works great as a daily bag going to and from the office -- with or without the Drift. With the Tour, it is possible to carry 32 oz of water and a smaller "Thermos" for soup or oatmeal; all without using the main pocket. Keys, cell phone, wallet, office badge, PPE, Purell, lunch, and a large medical pouch easily fit into the remaining pockets. The waist belt is a nice-to-have for long walks between buildings. Most of the time, the shoulder strap works best, for me. I have a number of bags, but the tour is probably the best, for general use. Highly recommended.

Large waist bag.
Not the largest Mountainsmith offers, but a very good sized day bag. I use it as a walk around bag for camera equipment. I also enhance it with the optional strappettes. The weight of the heavy camera/lens is borne on my hips, the strappettes and other adjustment straps keep it upright and pulled into my back. I can strike a great balance without straining my back or shoulders. Just slip arms out of straps and slide the bag to the front for easy access or when I need to sit down. For comfort while carrying heavy items it just can not be beat. When I need to carry extra clothing, rain gear or a bulky sweater, I use my larger Mountainsmith Day bag. I have found them both to be durable but lightweight. I am not a fan of the front panel on this one in the place of another zipped pocket, but it does offer zipped storage, I would just rather have the panel secured differently than the top shock cord attachment. A minor gripe, but there it is. I do really like this bag, there is little that compares to it for carrying comfort.

Hauls bottles, dog stuff, and essentials - just what you need, not much you don’t
Just took this pack out for its first quick spin. In general, I think I’m pretty pleased with it - I wanted a smaller-capacity pack for shorter day hikes that accommodated bottles, and it seems like all backpacks in this capacity (9L) range are for hydration bladders. Two and a half miles on rolling terrain later, I’m pretty pleased. No swampy back or shoulder cramps. I did need to hitch it up a few times, and I could feel it shifting a bit, but no flopping or bouncing with two 26oz Yeti bottles, a light jacket, and some basics (small medical kit, collapsible dog bowl, poop bags, knife, phone) on board. It’s easy to grab a bottle and replace it while walking. There’s plenty of thoughtful organization pockets, as well as a shock-corded “hammock” on the front that was just right for stuffing a Patagonia Nano Air jacket; it’d be great for a rain shell or vest too. I might give the Strapettes a try to see if it stabilizes the load a bit more. Fabric is burly and overall build seems very good - this is clearly designed to go some miles. The Rust Brown color is more of a pleasant, muted orange, which suits me fine. Overall, seems like a nice, if very dadcore, solution to carrying some water bottles and the basics on a day hike. I’ll try the shoulder strap to stabilize it more, and if that works nicely, I’ll bump a star.

pretty good for day hikes
So I transitioned to this fanny pack for my day hikes, and it works pretty darn well for that. I'm able to put in a 3 liter bladder in there, as well as hold a couple water bottles, and lunch, as well as a med kit, emergency blanket, lighter, pliers, toilet paper and trash bag for shelter. I mean, it's pretty full, but heck, that's not too bad to hold everything I need for a long day's hike. I've used it to take a water filter with a collapsible fishing pole, and everything I need for a hike through the mountains with fishing at the end. There are some cons though. This pack is kind of heavy. Yeah, I mean, it's not bad, but they could've cut out some of the extra features. I know I could just take some scissors to it and modify it myself, but not sure I'm going to do it at this time. It has a lot of unnecessary padding in my opinion and maybe too many organizational pockets. I don't need a pocket or compartment for everything, I mean come on it's a fanny pack! All in all though, I'm happy with this day pack, put lots of miles on it already, and I feel safe with what I'm carrying. Good job Mountainsmith, but still, I want to see better

WONDERFUL PACK
I purchased many hip packs, day packs, back packs over the years--but none like this one. The size, number of compartments, quality, and especially the fit, are great. Two of the larger hip packs I own from major brands have a design flaw where, when moderately loaded up, no matter how adjusted, the top part of the pack falls away from my waist and the pack bounces around awkwardly. Not so with this pack. Love the design, fit, and quality. Ordering one for my husband.

I usually carry a layer of warmth, a1+L of water&rain gear. I have low back pain-and it was great.
I do not know how waterproof it is. I haven't been in the rain. The loop on one side that retains water bottle broke immediately; I asked Mountain Smith what I would need to do to repair that and they more or less insisted that I send it in and they sent me a slightly newer model. It differs in that the model I purchased had a difference in the pocket on the back. The one I purchased was a flap of fabric open on all four sides that was great for carrying a jacket. The new one is closed on the bottom and still OK for carrying a jacket. But the big deal here is I have low back pain and I've had it for years. I was certainly able to go 10 miles with it without it, bothering my back. I doubt it so far I've tried to carry more than. Six or 7 pounds, but in decent weather, that's plenty.

Overpriced poor quality
It is a nice big (oversized) fanny pack with some good features but one of the straps broke the first time I used it. If it was less expensive I might understand but it is overpriced for this poor quality. It is also a little difficult to use fully loaded unless you purchase shoulder straps to provide further support.
