Spey Casting

The Speycaster's Bible
I have been Speycasting since 2001 using floating lines for Atlantic salmon. My maximum range measured from the reel is 94 feet.I own both editions of this book. I took a lesson from Walt Geryk in the fall of 2013. Walt is one of Simon's proteges. He pointed out during our lesson, there are a lot of details involved in Speycasting. This lesson has motivated me to reread sections of this book and already I can see ways that I can improve and get my casts well beyond 100 feet. This book has the details you need.

Excellent Photo tutorial Spey Casting Book
Perfect book to supplement the youtube spey casting videos. The book helps me learn technical casting details and broadens spey casting understanding while broadening my vocabulary. A must buy for new spey casters like myself.

Each topic is presented in an easy to follow manner
Spey Casting is a straight forward description of all the basic casts. Each topic is presented in an easy to follow manner. The snap T and circle C make the Single and Double Spey really a delight to perfect. The Switch Cast is the beginning of all constant tension casts and is the secret to understanding the airborne anchor casts. Great read, excellent description of Spey casting.

So many pictures, so little clarity
OK, admittedly, I've only done normal overhead fly casting with a singlehanded rod. That's why I bought this book. There is at least one lovely color photo on each page, usually of the spey rod instructor demonstrating something. But the text! It refers to such things as an imaginary orange line that the novice needs to imagine, because it is very important. However, not one photo is marred by actually showing where this orange line is, so that the reader can visualize it.Similarly, lots of photos and illustrations depict various milliseconds of the various spey casts. But there are few if any "stop action sequences" which let you visualize all the steps, body positions, and locations of rod and line so that you can visualize the entire cast. Now the sequences are described in detail, and for folks who can translate hundreds of words in dozens of sentences into a mental picture, this is great. For the rest of us, not so much.I'm convinced that my first one hour spey casting lesson will teach me more than spending days rereading each chapter of this book.

good book
well written, very clear, nice pictures, an overall good introduction to long line spey casting. But it will NOT replace a good instructor, or for me a DVD since I find video a lot more explanatory. A good book though, and a good read, that allows you to troubleshoot your casting at the end of a frustrating day of newbie spey casting :)

The book has multiple pictures and would be very difficult to learn from in Kindle form. The book is a little confusing because there are lots of pictures of the wrong way to do the cast.

Good for beginners and seniors who need clean up
Simon has always been a very good instructor who not only knew all the strokes but also character of each piece of equipment. And he knows to pull in others for things that he could do better. The only reason a 4 and not 5 is because the pictures are a bit small. Otherwise terrific job

This is a very good book and covers all aspects of spey style casting
This is a very good book and covers all aspects of spey style casting. However in spite of some additional later added material some of it seems a bit dated and of course describing casting and how to cast in print is a very difficult task but Simon has a good stab at it. Well worth a read.
