Q: Is the RAM upgradable?

It can be upgraded but it’s not for the faint hearted. Apple store will also do upgrades.

Q: Has anyone found a solution to the inherent overheating problems with the mac mini i am using the speed cooling, but even then the temperature is high

There is a very simple solution to Mac mini overheating - either get an upright stand, or easier, place the base of machine on a couple of small dowels / strips of wood, so there is space for air to circulate under the machine. This extended the life of my machine to over 5 years.

Q: is this better than the mac mini m2?

No the m2 has a much improved architecture and will process much faster. Be mindful some intel based or older applications may not run on m2 devices
