“Pug Nauseous”
My Pug Is an A**hole (2017) is Matt Shaw’s hilarious true story of getting his first dog in his mid-thirties. Always wanting a dog, it isn’t until he is an adult working at home as a full-time writer that he has the opportunity and the motivation to get a puppy. Unfortunately, he does so with little planning or really thinking about what being a dog owner will entail. Thus, his is a cautionary tale and no “Marley & Me story where I get a naughty dog, grow to love it and then—after many adventures together—am crushed when it dies. At the time of writing, the mutt is very much alive and well…”With the many anecdotes about Shaw and Chewie (the dog is named by Shaw’s wife) crammed into the little book, readers (especially dog owners) are going to find themselves repeatedly literally laughing out loud. Chewie’s antics are all pretty typical for a puppy, but what is actually outrageous are Matt’s usually shocked, uproarious, and usually expletive filled reactions to his dog.Equally sidesplitting are the many asides in the book with Shaw revealing aspects of his personal life. The mini tangents are often written in a funny, self-deprecating fashion and/or are laced with sexual innuendo.Regardless of the number of insults, the name calling, and invectives aimed at Chewie, it is clear the book is written “tongue firmly in cheek” which Matt admits and his love for Chewie shines through even if it has to slip around and through colorful corners of verbal condemnation. An “Obligatory Photo Section” of Matt and Chewie is also included that only reinforces Shaw’s love for the pup and will have dog lovers oohing and ahhing.

Long time pug owner
I sooo wanted to like this book, but alas, I didn't. I certainly can attest to the nature of pugs and their unique personality traits and maintenance demands. The book was not well written and the language was simply not necessary and in fact became a distraction because it was so pervasive. In fairness the writer did warn me up front that this was not "Marley and Me". I guess it just wasn't my cup of tea, a few grins but nothing worth remembering.

For all Pug Parents
I’ve been the proud “Mom” of two pugs, and true to Mr. Shaw’s book, they are exactly as he’s described. It’s all the more reason to adopt one. I swear Mr. Shaw has been living in my home, observing my Pugs. I love this book - foul language aside. ( If you’re the least bit sensitive - pass on this book). Definitely 5 out of 5

This should be required reading before you get a pet.
Matt, at least you got a pug. My Anatolian Shepard is a bigger dick than I am and he weighs 90lbs. I enjoyed this story, it's a departure from Sick Bastards for sure, but I still laughed all the way through it.

So funny
It's a good read especially if you own a pug or they own you.. I loved his sense of humor.

So so
I think I prefer his more gruesome sex and torture stories. Even though I do have 4 dogs so I do understand where he's coming from.☺

Funny book
A HILARIOUS book for reluctant dog owners who JUST gave in. Shaw writes great horror but his cheeky side is always lingering. With this one he let's it loose!

Great read
Well Matt another great read as a fellow pug owner it was like reading about my own little treasure they should rename the whole breed to Velcro though as they do stick to you you certainly do highlight the goods and bands of dog owner in a way that is fun and understandable well done fab book

Easy short read
It’s a short and easy read however some of the language is a bit much esp as I have this book to my mum without realising some of the content. It’s more about the author than the pug.

This is a long essay, not a book.
This isn’t a book; it’s a long essay. Sure, it was nice (20/30 minute) read, but it’s not a book and therefore felt like rip off.

As a pug owner myself, who really didn't know what I was getting into when my first pug came home I could relate to a lot of this book. It was super funny and also heartwarming. An excellent read.
