Q: These melamine or ceramic? Says they aren't microwave safe.

These are ceramic. I think the no microwave warning is because they are now made in China and the paint may not withstand the microwave. The original Portmeirion were made in the UK. Totally dishwasher safe.

Q: are these plates or bowls? i'm looking for the 7.25" plates 1 1/4 inch high

They are 6.5 inches wide and a little over an inch high!
