Q: Is the receiver only 5.1ch or is it a 7.1ch

It is a 5.1.2ch audio/visual receiver. This means it has two "height" speaker channels in addition to two frontal speakers and two surround speakers and a central speaker and a subwoofer channel. The "height" speakers are in the top of the frontal speakers and are angled to reflect sound off of the ceiling. Because the receiver is designed to decode Dolby Atmos, the "height" speakers make it sound like sound is coming from above your head. This receiver has the same number of channels as a 7.1ch receiver but they are used differently. In 7.1ch receivers, there are two frontal speakers, a central speaker, two speakers to either side of your ears, and two speakers that come from behind. This is a total of 7 channels or speakers. This Onkyo receiver doesn't have two of the surround speakers but does have two "height" speakers. As I mentioned already, the "height" speakers make it sound like sounds are coming from above. It is really cool to hear a helicopter fly over your head or hear rain dropping down on a roof above you. I would get this Onkyo receiver if I wanted to play Dolby Atmos sound tracks on Blu - ray discs. Google "Dobly Atmos" for more information. Hope this helps.

Definitely get at least a Blu-ray player, ideally a 4K/UHD/HDR/Dolby Vision disc player for this system if you’ve already got a Samsung 4K/UHD TV, presumably w/HDR, maybe more. Those disc players also will often play SACD’s, DVD-Audio, etc, high resolution audio formats, so you’ll get the best performance possible in video & audio. They’ll also support the Dolby Atmos & DTS-X “object effects this HTIB/receiver/speakers gives you, enjoy! Though this is an old question, those looking now will at least get the best, most current info possible from this answer. Good luck.
