Uk PUNK Classic- Essential!!!
The fact that theres only 3 other reviews up to this point shows how underrated this classic is. This is the first "punk " record out of the Uk released before the pistols clash etc. The Damned really were a special group combining tight songwriting unbelievable energy and more importantly a sense of humor. Almost every song on this record (cd) is a stone cold classic - crisp quick loud full of fun and well "rocking".Great vocals by singer/ vampire Dave Vanian- a booming voice over shearing riffs and pounding drums. This along with Machine Gun Ettiquette (the damneds third lp)is a must own alongside Never mind the bollocks the clash's debut and In the City by the Jam. The damned still tour (yeah theyre fatter older and not nearly as good as the glory days but worth seeing all the same. THe damned also stayed exclusively on Independant labels while all the other "punk" bands signed major label deals. The damned did sign with Mca in the mid eighties and suffered artisically despite some flirts with major success. Its been heralded as the Uk's best from 1977 and its hard not to agree.

GRADE "A" CLASS OF 77 BRITISH PUNK
I was 15 in 1977 and it was heaven on the British music scene.I bought all the classic British albums from that year - by The Clash, Sex Pistols, Stranglers, Elvis Costello, Vibrators, Generation X, Adverts, etc., etc. EXCEPT The Damned! Thought they would sound really cheesey! But this year, my curiosity got the best of me (of course I had long ago heard New Rose, but that was all), and I bought Machine Gun Etiquette (awesome!) and DAMNED DAMNED DAMNED. The latter is a SUPERB punk album, even though it is a bit of a low-key affair (not screeching loud). The best tracks are Neat Neat Neat, Fan Club, Feel the Pain, and It's Allright. But all of it is loads of fun and ATTITUDE and has unique production values ("This is made to be played LOUD at low volume" it says on the CD artwork! And that is how the production sounds! - produced by the legendary Nick Lowe). And of course the CD cover is a CLASSIC. The band licking what looks like vomit off of each other!

Damed near perfect!
Damned near Perfect! Delivery was as promised and the new anniversary release is spectacular! Comes with a four fold booklet with stories, photos, and insights on each song. Also love that included is a cover art version that can be mounted and displayed. Very pleased with my purchase.

Early punk classic
Damned Damned Damned was the first significant punk album of 1977 and a blueprint for how to do it right. Neat Neat Neat is one of the best opening tracks ever, and New Rose is one of the best debut singles ever. Damned Damned Damned exudes punk without hiding its classic rock influences - simply put, it's not only one of the best punk albums of all time, but also one of the best rock albums.

The first U.K. punk album, still my favorite
Of all of the first crop of U.K. pink bands, The Damned have the most frenetic energy, and the most musical talent. From the scorching album opener Neat Neat Neat to the surprisingly dark Feel The Pain, to the closer I Feel Alright (a blistering Stooges cover), this album never lets up. Play it at your sister. This 200g vinyl is the best way to listen to this classic. I've never heard the album sound better. Truly well done.

Easily the BEST of the genuine punk records.
I LOVE this album. Bought it on vinyl when it first came out, went to see The Damned countless times; ALWAYS loved them for their excitement, fun, control and complete understanding of what made kids want to go and see bands live. Fabulous - and this first punk album (with first punk single) is just as glorious now as it ever was then. Terrific, genre-establishing approaches to songwriting, playing and singing. As intense as you like, but funny and knowing with it. Absolutely glorious. The remastered anniversary edition has some nice notes - thankfully, no embellishments or extras, and STILL a fine, wipe-clean cover. Half an hour of the greatest approach to punk on record, before punk handed itself over to the style geeks and record label arses. This is the real deal. I love it now as much as the day I bought it over forty years ago.

Damned if you do , etc.
I arrived just too late to catch thier first flush.First saw them in Hemel Hempseed June 79 ( Dave Vanian rather unpunkishly making sure his parents were comfortably seated before taking the stage) Love song riding high (ish) in the charts. After two out of their three albums introduced me to The Stooges and The MC5 I have to admit I spent more time listening to them than The Damned. But year after year this album ( along with MGE and The Black album ) would hit the turntable, and stay on.Great album, very good remaster, good concept ( the art of the album contextualises the work nicely) brilliant photos.Neat etc etc

Great Great Great album
This is the best work by the first incarnation of the Damned. Brian James was still the main songwriter, and Captain Sensible was still waiting to fill his shoes as guitarist whilst playing the bass. It sounds like it was recorded in someone's shed with everything turned up to 11, and there is little evidence that they were careful with tuning their instruments, but none of that matters. What matters is that this is probably the most true to the roots of American punk album that came out of the British punk scene. It's all MC5, Stooges and New York Dolls rather than the Pistols/Clash type of punk. It's the real amateur stuff, but it's TALENTED amateur stuff! The first British punk single is here, the fantastic 'New Rose' (Is she really going out with him?), and it's full of great numbers that once heard are never forgotten. It's only half an hour long, but there is a lot crammed into that short space of time. Mostly Brian James penned songs, with a Rat Scabies number and a Stooges number thrown it, it just makes you want to move some part of your body in time with it.Cool album by one of the coolest bands.

Damned Good Buy For the Fans
Despite having a lot of the cd material already on the Stiff Years Anthology I bought this primarily for the live cd and the interview discs both of which will be of interest to fans. The booklets and family tree are also great added extras. The live cd catches the atmosphere, and I don't think the sound quality is that bad if you consider how it was recorded. What I found interesting is that the band are obviously still feeling their way round the songs and they don't quite replicate the blistering speed of all of the studio recordings. (Didn't take them long to catch up though!)Not the best place to start if you're not familiar with The Damned, but hours of fun for fans - and what else would you expect from the most consistently underrated band ever!
