200 Blues Licks: Guitar Licks Goldmine

Great instruction video for Advanced players
I bought this video for my 15 yr old son that has been playing guitar for 5 years now and I would consider him an advanced player. He really likes the instruction flow; straight and to the point and the way the instructors demonstrate each lick without too much history on each lick. There is quite a bit of pausing, rewinding and that's to be expected. However, I signed him up for online lessons with JamPlay and several other online instruction sites, some free and while others are not, that didn't keep him interested. The 200 Blues licks video is worth about 4 to 5 months worth of online subscription, maybe longer. If you add that up at $15 per month, that's $75. So you get your money's worth with this video and you can go back as often as you like without a monthly fee. As I mentioned in the title, this video is not for beginners but is well suited for someone that has the chords down and has knowledge of scales.

Fine instruction for advanced beginner or intermediate player
If you are an advanced guitarist or a pro, you already know what's on this DVD. More for beginners (not complete newbies) and intermediate level players. It helps if you know all the notes on the fretboard to understand the explanations of the licks, but if you can run the minor pentatonic scale boxes comfortably you'll have no problem digesting the material. Great content and useful licks, but in reality it's more like 75 licks with embellishments added to those. Take the licks that grab you and just woodshed them to tears...over and over and over. Yes, that means many hundreds of times. Play them slowly and accurately at first. Then try them to a backing track at various speeds. You'll have that riff in your pocket for life. Rock on!

Hard to use because tab is only available on screen for a few seconds on each lick.
The good: These licks are very useful. There are three different instructors involved. Each has their own section on the DVD. The first guy is very good at describing the key. The second guy seems kind of advanced for me. He seems to be more oriented to advanced players who don't need detailed explanation. I probably got the most out of the third guy. He has smaller licks that can be used anywhere. He had a lot of very usable hammer/pull licks that can be inserted into just about any situation. The bad: The tablature is shown for a few seconds at the beginning. The only way that I've been able to get through this is to use my computer so I can do a screen-print, save the image, crop to the tablature and print. Try doing that for "200 Blues Licks." If the producers would've either included a PDF of the tab or left it on the screen during the step-by-step instruction, I would've given this review a 5. I emailed the producer to see if the tab was available. He just directed me to the website to buy more stuff that may be similar. He just didn't get it.

Not polished, but a good value.
This video is filled with 1 to 2 minute clips of blues licks, along with good instruction. I found it to be quite boring and monotonous though. Still, it's better than $45.00 an hour for a guitar teacher. I just don't feel like it is a polished and finished product. They could have added some blues tracks for you to play to. I do like that there are some tracks that are slowed down and it's nice to have the tab there as well. Overall a good value, just not an outstanding value.

IT PAYS FOR ITSELF
I've played guitar for many years but found myself in a rut. This DVD takes you step by step showing you how to play these different licks. Actual lessons cost quite a bit and once the lesson is over, it's over. With 200 Blues Licks, you can go back and review time and time again until your skills are honed and these licks become second nature. It should be noted that some of these licks are quite easy and some of them can be a bit tricky to master. I rate it 5 stars for content and value.

Really bare instructions.
The licks have no detail at all. It's just the person playing the lick at normal speed, a tab shows up on screen and then the person plays it slower. No instruction from the player at all. I wouldn't really mind all that though if I wouldn't have paid over $20 for the dang thing.

Great Product
Me and the guys we all sit around and watch this vid and drink beer. Tommy brings orderves. Our wives think were at work but in reality we all got fired for drinkin beer at work. So this vid doubles as a cover to hide from our wives. Tommys wife has a job thats why he can afford orderves. I reccommend this vid to anybody who has recently gotten fired from their job.

It's ok but...
It's a bit of a mixed bag, a lot of the licks are not what I would consider "blues". Some of them are very good some of them aren't, but this is just my opinion you might think differently.
