Good amp/dac, but is it still the best for the price?.
Good dac/amp for the price. Supports a lot of input options. The following are my problems with it (which considering its price isn't an issue at all)1. Slightly harsh dac2. Amp is on the colder, brighter and grainier side3. Doesn't have the low end energy that my other amps have4. As a dac only, each of the inputs seem to give a slightly different sound quality, the best being coax, followed by usb and finally optical.5. When I connect my mac and Aune with an optical cable, the sound becomes a lot harsher. I have swapped a bunch of macs the harshness remains. However, it could be a problem with all macs though.6. Price has remained the same for a long time. A lot of even more competent dac/amps are available in the same price range (or if you stretch a bit like schiit stack)

If you are looking for a no compromises all in one AMP/DAC look no further.
Build Quality: The aune X1s is built well both physically and internally. Nothing on it seems to be cheaply made. The volume knob doesn't feel cheap or loose and the front button for switching between the different ports has a nice tactile and quality feel to it. Also the led light for each input when selected is green and not some ungodly bright blue that keeps you up at night. For such a small amp/dac the sucker is heavy so be careful it will smash a toe or two. Of course if you drop it well you are going to feel more emotional pain than physical for breaking such a nice piece of kit. One of the best feelings is lifting this thing out of the box(is a really nice box) and feeling the absolute weight of it in your hands.WHATS IN THE BOX?!: Well the Aune itself of course, 1 4-5ft long USB Type A to Type B cable, A 3.5mm to 6.35mm converter, A power cable with a power supply right in the middle of it (I'll talk about that in a minute) that reads "Input: AC 110V-50/60Hz Output: AC 12V-0V-12V/0.8A" , and a little plastic packet with a USB drive that says user manual and a business card.Lets talk about the power cable/brick. Probably the 1 thing that can be called a con with this product is that the converter is stuck right in the middle of the cable. As it is quite heavy it needs to be supported. You can't leave this thing hanging off the desk or shelf where you put it. It will probably end up dragging the power plug right out of the back port it is so heavy. An extension cord of your required length is recommended as there is about 3 feet of cable on either side of the brick.Setup and Drivers: I am using windows 7 64-bit Professional. This unit does have and require drivers for windows machines. You can find them here (http://www.ingeniousingenuity.com/User-Manuals_ep_43-1.html). Scroll down and you will see in bold text Aune Audio Manuals with one of the options saying drivers. Once the drivers are installed make sure you disable the enhancements in the aune X1s properties under playback devices. Don't uncheck them actually disable them.As for what cable to use when hooking this thing up to your PC remember that grounding is important. If you are getting a hiss trying a Digital Optical SPDIF cable might help. Most gaming motherboards that I know of have a coax and optical port on them for audio. My board is 3-4 years old and it certainly does. A thing to note though is that while this product does support DSD it can only be achieved using USB while the optical and coax are only capable of 24-Bit decoding. But that is the standard right now so no worries there.Sound Quality: It is probably why your here. You want an increase in sound stage and sound quality. This thing delivers both in spades as long as you have the cans to support it. There is no substitute for having a good set of headphones so please look into getting some of those first before you get an amp/dac. There is no way to objectively tell you how good this is compared to something like a Schitt Magni/Modi setup as I have never heard those but this thing will bring your music up a notch or two provided you have the headphones.Lastly I believe this AMP/DAC to be a great solution for saving space as oppose to getting a separate amp and DAC. It drives my ATH-AD900x's with no issues. I don't even have to move the volume knob past 11 o'clock to get more than I can handle before my eardrums start bleeding. Now if you were driving something like 600 ohm headphones that is where a separate amp and DAC would excel a little more as far as driving them. But to be honest this thing would have no issues driving them either they just may not be as loud as a setup with separate devices. But that really is the only sacrifice this unit makes if you could even call it that for if you have 600 ohm headphones this unit could only be used as a DAC and then paired with a 3rd party amp.So what made me buy this over something such as the Schitt Magni/modi 2 setup. The fact that this level of sound/build quality all come in a nice single package for 90 bucks more than a Magni/Modi whereas the Magni/<odi 2 stack is a clunkier setup that has to be stacked or placed next to each other. If that is something worth paying a little more for than this is your product It won't disappoint you.

Good bang for your buck.
I didn't know about the Aune X1S until I saw Z Reviews on YouTube. If you haven't seen any of his stuff and are serious about audio, you should consider checking his reddit and YouTube Channel out. After several reviews, I realized that the X1S was a go-to for Zeos and given everything he has put his hands on, this meant it was likely more than good enough for me.I was looking for a good DAC/amp to drive some quality headphones that I procured. After trying out the X1S, it more than meets the bang for your buck. I have used it to drive some Westone W30, Sony MDR-V700 and AKG K712. All of them sound better with the X1S than they previously ever did. This includes the use of my AudioQuest Dragonfly Red.I am running Win10 and had issues running the X1S at first. I read some post online and found that Win10 has some issues with the X1S after the Anniversary update as the non-certified drivers were dropped. Luckily, the unit comes with a USB stick that includes the drivers (I was not able to download them from Aune's website as the link was broken). I was also able to get this to work on my Linux Mint box without issue (no additional drivers needed). The X1S will not work with my iOS devices as they tell me it requires to much power. I do not get this as the unit as powered from a dedicated supply. My Android devices seem to do just find with it.The audio quality is amazing and it has, so far, easily driven all of my headphones (I don't exactly have any T50RP to drive...yet). I like that it has many connection options, but I have, so far, only tried the USB connection. I have not noticed any issues with the XMOS chipset and have had great lossless audio (no packet loss, buffer issues, pops/clicks, etc.).I have read some reviews state that the RCA outputs are not controlled by the volume knob. I have not tested this and there is nothing about it in the documentation. The documentation only states that you can connect it or headphones and use the volume knob to control the volume (they do not specify if it controls just the headphone output or both). I would like if the RCA was volume controlled, but if not, there are ways around this (like the Emotiva inline, passive volume knob). If you are looking for a good DAC/amp, you need look no further. There might be some issues with very high impedance headphones, but in that case, you are looking at a totally different price bracket.
