If you write stories please get this book. You’ll be glad you did.
Although the book is targeted to screenwriters I feel it is a valuable tool for anyone who writes stories. The exercises throughout the book are excellent. They are simple, fun and anyone can do them. The exercises make coming up with ideas for stories easy. This book is to storytelling what the keys to a car are. The keys start the car engine, this book starts your storytelling engine. Filled with solid information that will get your story rolling. I highly recommend it.Review copy supplied by MWP

Concise wisdom, a must
Talk about concise, virtuoso storytelling principles with the wisdom of a journeyman. Matthew Kalil shows us fundamentals of screenwriting and storytelling in a whole new way, from Flaubert to Allende, to what brings characters to life, he never steps wrong. Kalil also knows what moves us, why cinema is so successful as a medium. Therein lies the key to this book, which is a must for all filmmakers. Extremely well done.

What I found most useful about this book is the language and approach that Mr. Kalil has with us as the audience. I felt so empowered to develop my own writing skills and truly felt like I had extra insight into story development as a whole. I have been a big fan of Robert McKee's "Story", but this book gave me so many more exercises and opportunities to develop myself. I loved it! Highly recommended.

Beautifully written, Kalil takes us on a journey that compels us to dig deep and helps us grow as writers and as human beings. The exercises in the book are thoughtful and challenging and really helped me access ideas and energy for my writing,I especially like his intimate personal approach to the process. As he writes, "Somewhere in you, I believe, is a story that “must be written”. Not just told to friends and family but written because in the act of writing something magical and healing happens."
