Q: what type of pipe is it constructed of?

This is a molded product made with LDPE (low density polyethylene)

Q: The image show two different size vaults, but the description only gives dimensions for one. Does this include one or two vaults?

The ad is for the (1) Mono Vault #248s 45' x 12" only(the rifle is leaning against it), it is very difficult to get good pictures of certain products so we have to use what is available from the manufacture. Product is in stock ready to ship.

Q: can these be bury these horizontally or do they have to be buried vertical

The unit has a water tight seal so it should be ok in either position.

Q: it says 12.25-in. approximate inside diameter, but is the throat a smaller diameter?

Yes. The threads at the opening represent the smallest dimension at about 10-3/4".
