We came, we saw, we learned!
This book has a number of wonderful ways to support deep learning about the topic, Ancient Rome. Whether you're teaching in the classroom or home schooling, students read a passage about an aspect of ancient Roman culture and then make something. IN the chapter on The Roman Army, students read about shields and how they were used in a defensive formation "Testudo (Tortoise) Formation," and then they make a shield. We've made a, Roman cookbook, and a couple of tasty dishes from the cookbook. (You can take this even further and have the students create a menu from the terms they've learned in the Daily Life section.) We've also made a volcano-shaped book with facts about Pompeii. There are eight chapters including Government, Education, Religion and Mythology, Engineering, Entertainment, and more. At the end of each chapter there is an opportunity for the child to reflect on all that they've learned and write a short response and reflection sheet.

Love it!
I love the History Pockets books! I teach 6th grade Ancient Civilizations to heterogenous classes. These books are fantastic at getting the kids interested in the content. I haven't used many of the activities from the books, but I've used some of the ideas for the activities to create my own. I've used the readings themselves for stations and other activities and they are perfect for struggling readers, but not too simplified for the on grade level and higher kids. The readings also touch on many of the important aspects of the content and are great for introducing the information. I can't write enough to say how much I love these books even if you don't use them to make "pockets." :)

Great resource full of information, crafts, and activities.
Using this for a unit on ancient Rome, for a homeschool group. The activities look great! The kids are going to love the recipe book and volcano booklet. The arch is going to be helpful too. I was also glad to find more information on Romulus and Remus and a picture that didnt show them suckling on the she wolf!!!

Fun activities
These pocket books are a great accompaniment to any history program. I've used them with mystery of history and now with vision forum's history of Christianity and human civilization.

Great information BUT.....
I love this brand of books for our homeschooling. I was so excited to add these more hands on projects for my daughter BUT whoever designed the book layout failed. The pages are double sides and often you're supposed to cut something from both sides of the same page. We opted to photocopy the extra activities but they could have put the written information on one side and things to cut on the other side, it's a bad design with good intention.
