Great router, online in under 10 minutes
This router is my first wireless one ever and I am very pleased with the purchase. After a lot of research, I decided on the D-Link. I have read that LinkSys routers set the standard for ease of use, but I cannot really imagine how much easier installation and setup can get! Honestly, I had the router setup in under 10 minutes with my laptop connected to my cable modem and accessing the internet via the router's LAN port (i.e. ethernet cable). The router sports some nice firewall features. I was not too impressed with the online help however. Several options that the router offers for configuration were not described in the online help (stored in router firmware). The D-Link support site has decent information, perhaps enough for you to get most problems taken care of. However, I had an issue when using the D-Link DWL-G650 card with WAP security which after about 6 hours of frustration got resolved in about 5 minutes with a phone call to customer service. Anyway, this was no fault of the router itself since the blame lies on the outdated driver D-Link ships with the PC card. I use AT&T VPN solution to access my office network and the router works just fine. The DHCP server came up just fine and my machines were happily on the network via wires. Pros: - easy to setup - good security features - D-Link website has pretty good cust service info - IPSEC VPN passthrough worked without any issues Cons: - online help included in firmware not the best - Several advanced options of firewall etc not very well documented (ie. not that easy to use for those inexperience with advanced security settings) Overall, I'd give this router a 4.5 stars and would definitely consider it a good buy for both the novice as well as experienced computer users.

Definitely worth considering
I bought the router along with DWL-G650 wireless card for laptop about a week ago. Prior to placing my order (Amazon.com) I've read tons of reviews about various routers from all major brands. There isn't a single wireless router (within mid-price range) that would make everyone happy. Since I had not had a wireless router before, my colleagues(programmers) as well as online reviews helped me to make this decision. This router had the least amount of negative reviews and the price was very compelling, so I went for it. Things that I like about this router: - Easy installation and wizard configuration; - Great performance (I've noticed my Comcast Cable began working faster with the router connected directly to the desktop through the cable modem) - It supports file sharing applications like eMule or Kazaa (Note: There are some entries to be added to the Firewall configuration settings. The instructions could be easily found on the D-Link website knowledge base) - It supports VPN access. - It works great with D-Link DWL-G650 wireless card for my laptop. I was able to get the near a 100% strength signal with 70 to 100% quality throughout the house in between 2 walls or on a different floor. - I was able to connect to my work computer using VPN and PCAnywhare software from the laptop (wirelessly). - Never had connection-dropping problem yet (knock on wood). - Toll free customer support is a great plus. Some major brands don't have toll free support!!! Some customers have complained about low level of customer support. It seems low-level customer service has become standard nowadays throughout the industry. Judging by my personal experience dealing with any customer service is a hit or miss chance. So, if you missed once, try again. - It supports Wi-Fi standard, that may not be useful just yet, but pretty soon it may come handy, as lots of home electronics will use it more to be able to connect to home network.

Product is ok, D-link support SUCKS big time
have been using this product for more than a year .. the product is great, but the d-link support SUCKS!! after i got it and installed it (by the way, the installation was simple for me, the direction were acurate), but my phone line was interfering with the signals and whenever i got a call, i used to loose connection. So i called the d-link support to ask for suggestions. The first line of support had some standard answers about changing channels etc which were not really helpful. So they transferred me to their technical support and the nerve of that guy who answered the call .. he just told me not to use my phone .. i was so pissed that if that guy was in front of me i would really have given him a piece of my mind .. i told him that if you guys knew that there would be such problem (especially since he had a ready answer), why do they not publish this as a known issue of their product in their website .. i also asked him how would he react if called for some support for some other product and got such an answer .. anyway, after thanking him for NOTHING and telling him that i would be returning the product (he cared less whether i returned it or not), i hung up the phone .. anyway, i calmed down and started looking at the setup and various options and got a channel or downloaded the latest software (i do not remember eactly what i did) but i got it working .. i have not really had any serious issues with it since .. do note that i am a software professional and so kind of knows about software and hardware installations because building software is my job .. i recently shifted to a bigger house which has 2 floors and i have the router on the top floor .. currently i am connected with it from the floor below and it is showing full signal .. i do have the "booster" option on .. i do not remember the correct option, but i am sure you can find that in the settings .. a point to note that is that when you reboot the router, it looses all the setting like the MAc filters etc and becomes available to everyone .. something which might be obvious to others, but i missed and noticed it when i reviewed the logs and found lot of my neighbours using my router .. someone accidently or purposely even changed some of my settings because even the admin password got reset to the defaults .. Update - Dec 2008 Had a issue couple of months back when I dropped the router .. all the lights just stayed on and the router was not working. I tried all options, rebooting etc, but nothing would make it work. So I removed the connections and connected my computer directly to my modem and I no longer had the wirelss connection and I started looking around for a new router. But luckily I forgot to completely remove the router and it was left switched on. After a month or 2, I noticed the lights were blinking. So I wondered whether it has started working .. and I connected it back and tried the connection and suprisingly everthing was back to normal :-) .. it has been 3-4 months since then and its still working ..

Excellent Product
An excellent product from D-Link. Does all what it says with minimum user interference, which is exactly what a router should do. I needed a router to share my broadband connection, among several computers wired+wireless. It is very easy and quick to setup with reasonable defaults(first setup is done by friendly wizard). It includes some nice security features, such as a mac and an ip filter to filter out unwanted mac addresses and ips, although this is easily overcome. It also has parental control features which are kinda cool, although i haven't and won't use them. Although i didn't customize it, it revealed no open ports and no easy way to hack in on online tests, which makes it ideal if you want moderate security without tinkering too much with the firewall interface. It uses virtual servers for port forwarding(exposing specific internal network ports on the public ip), which is very easy to set up. The wireless connectivity is good, and it has a good range and speed. Although, i was unable to test the 802.11g since my laptop wireless uses b-based protocol. I did notice sometimes the connection dropping with the corresponding reconnects, although i think that this has something to do with the g-to-b protocol interoperability. But, it is hardly noticeable. All in all, this a reasonably priced product for a mixed home network.

A Full-Featured High-Performance "Piece of Junk".
I used to love D-Link so I replaced my old "b"-band di-614+ with this "G"-band Xtreme di-624 and what a day and night. I would give some stars for it's performance and features but the hassle dealing with its problems is not worth it. Go do a Google search for "d-link di-624" and you would read from countless victims of this product. It works great when it chooses to. But sometimes it just does not want to connect with the cable modem. Or it just keeps restarting every few minutes like most users have complained. It also seemed that one must use a special "crash recovery" method to load the newest firmware (2.50). Either firmware for my Rev.C router yields the same results. Normally a couple reboots with manual network cable disconnect/reconnect would make the router 'fly' again but would not stop me from constantly turning my head to the modem to check for connection light. I would spend a little more and give up some features for a stable and worry-free router. I would even consider buying the old "b"-versions but not this junk. I think paying consumers really want a stability and a worry-free, or at worst a fixable router.

Good but....
If your WLAN only includes 802.11G based devices this device will be very usefulll for you. (It deserves 5 stars) Wireless setup is very very simple and effective. Firewall, Filters (MAC, URL, Domain), Virtual Server (Virtual Server is used to allow Internet users access to LAN services), DMZ features is very good and all of them is working without a problem. You can also do some fine tunnings for WLAN performance. (Beacon, RTS, DTIM etc.) 128 bit WEP encryption nearly does not have any effect on the WLAN performance. It is two times faster than 802.11b (13-14 Mbit real world performance) and worked in 90 feet without a problem. And I think the size and looks of the router is more cool than others. But here is the conclusions: Almost all system settings changes forces the router to reboot without asking to user! This device is not fully compitable with 802.11b devices. (i.e HP iPAQ 5450) There is no settings for wireless modes. I mean I could not set the router to 802.11b only mode. Forcing the router to 11Mbit in performance settings is simply not working. If you have 802.11g PCI/PCMCIA adaptor it is imposiible to slow down the router. In the case of 802.11b compatiblity, I totally dissatisfied about D-Link Support. And remmember that 802.11G is a draft standart.

Easy Setup for DI-624 - False Advertising Concerning Security is Only Drawback
I just received my wireless router yesterday (D-Link DI-624). I bought this router to replace my old Netgear MR814 which wasn't working well with my wife's iBook. The setup was extremely easy from my older router to the new one. Didn't have any problems connecting to the internet. Great router for the price is one reason I bought this router as well as the rave reviews I read. I really like the Administrator web page you use to set up the router. My old security contingency for my last router was to simply take off the antenna so no one could get on to my connection. I emailed tech support concerning the option to turn off the radio on the D-Link router and I got a quick response from a rep who told me there was an option to turn off the radio which is wonderful. Now there is the issue of security when the radio is transmitting. I've read countless articles about how easy it is to crack WEP or WPA and so I figured that wasn't an option on this router. A friend of mine told me about AES (Advanced Encryption Standard) which the federal government is implementing to protect their classified information. I guess it's supposed to be a lot more secure than the previous standard. And so when I read this in the product detail on D-Link's website, "The DI-624 is also capable of supporting the government-grade AES encryption and upcoming 802.11i standards" I immediately jumped on board and bought one. So when I contacted D-Link to find out how I can implement AES the response I got from D-Link was that currently the firmware for this hardware didn't support AES but to check back another time. False advertisement? Poorly timed advertisement? I'm a little disappointed. I've considered returning this unit and getting a different one by a different manufacturer. It boggles my mind why a manufacturer would promise one thing and not come through. If you're not overly concerned about security then this would be a great router. I highly recommend it. If you are overly concerned then I suggest buying a router that is AES compliant already.
