The Truth about Balanced Literacy!
In a letter to readers, Doug, Nancy and Nancy say, "We believe balanced literacy is the best way students can grow as readers and writers." This book lays the foundation for what needs to be balanced and how to find balance from the first paragraph through to the end. Balance includes:research-based,principles of UDL,differentiation, skills and knowledge, large group and small group, direct and dialogic instruction, and high level support and targeted supportwith a focus on the components of reading that are important for elementary students.Yes, students need systematic phonics instruction. That is definitely a component that is included.Teachers, coaches, study teams and administrators who read and study this text and the videos with peers will be able to implement the strategies with the right balance that is needed for a K-6 elementary literacy program. Not convinced: check out a sample chapter at corwin.com!

Finally: A Common Sense View of Balanced Literacy
From the moment I heard that Douglas Fisher, Nancy Frey and Nancy Akhavan were publishing This is Balanced Literacy, I was relieved and excited. Balanced Literacy has recently been on the firing lines riddled in opinion, assumption. and misconception. This is Balanced Literacy is much needed in address these inaccuracies by providing a common sense view that illustrates the immense impact of a broad instructional framework designed to address the unique needs of children across the learning day. The authors take a close look at whole class, small group, side-by-side and independent reading and writing using a no nonsense discussion that makes room for differentiation, intervention as well as rich collective experiences that build a community of learners. I will be sharing this book far and wide.
