Fine book, bold diagrams and text, recent modern analysis, photos of GMs, & Index, too
The author has a fine product here and the diagrams and text moves are bold and easy to see. The most important, modern analysis of the Pirc-Modern is covered here as well as illustrative games, an index of players and games, etc.. The author is most kind to provide photos of some of the top grandmasters, including the GM's of today, which should serve to inspire many players and readers. Over 250 pages of variations, games, index, table of contents and players, etc..

Play for a winat all cost !
Moskalenko is clear in this effort. You play the Pirc/Modern for a win not a draw. I have played the Pirc/Modern for a long time and find this an excellent book. Recommend it completely for the devotee and tthe novice "RAT" player as Duncan Suttles called it. I recommend this book highly and a book by Cyrus Lakdawala,"The Modern Defence: Move by Move" and his companion book,"d6:Move by Move". All three are lovly books and I can say they have increased my winning percentage in my local club.

The author creates excellent books
This is an excellent book on the Pirc with just a little on the Modern. I would have liked to see more coverage of the Modern. The reason for four stars is that there are way to many side lines for my liking. Sometimes I had to turn thru several pages then back again trying to find the mainline which was lost in all of the variations. This could be done better.

Find Another Book on the Pirc Defense
Wow! I've been playing chess for several years and have read a handful of chess books on opening theory. To summarize this review in short, skip this book and head straight to the online database where you can explore engine lines on your own or get a different book. The explanations behind the moves in this book are sparse and usually very generic. Also, in the middle of reviewing example games he inserts large textbooks with primarily, you guessed it, engine lines. Not only are data dumps of engine lines rather useless in a world where we have stockfish and online databases at at fingertips but they are also very distracting from the example games he's trying to show us.He inserts other textboxes which he calls "Tricks." One example reads: "9. c3? Qg4!" That's it! Nothing more! Zero, I mean ZERO explanation. Yes, I know how to read chess annotations but the author's comments are no better than looking at example games on your own with an online database and using stockfish. Again, the textboxes are rather distracting and useless.I was reading the chapter on the Byrne variation 4. Bg5 which is a very important line in this system. The author's explanation goes as follows: " The arising lines rather resemble the typical positional Torre systems with Bg5." Then he follows with a couple of equally useless bullet points. I have no idea what the Torre system is. Why doesn't the author explain these "positional systems" instead of directing me to see another entirely different opening? I don't care about the Torre system. I care about the Pirc. That's why I bought this book.Sorry, this is not it. I have no idea how this book got so many positive reviews. Find a different book to learn the Pirc Defense unless you want very watered down insight coupled with engine line after engine line.

Alburt (Pirc Alert) bzw. Vigus (Pirc in Black and White) wesentlich besser. Trends findet man sehr gut in Vigus (Pirc Development), etwas weniger in Palliser (Dangerous Weapons).
