I am looking for neck scarf to wear with a top. Are these too large for that purpose?

not at all. the 4 x 4 size is perfect for all sorts of options and uses. I've worn mine as head scarves, and worn them in a neck scarf or neckerchief form to dress up my neck and shoulders. It's almost like a mini-shawl but not over sized.
