What do the two terms, "lighted handle" and pilot light toggle" refer to? What I want is one that glows bright red if we forget and leave it on.

I recently purchased the Leviton 1221-PLR 20 amp single pole switch that is illuminated when it is turned on. The red light on the switch handle has a very nice glow. Basically, all you need to get is a switch that says illuminated when on. Hope this leads you in the right direction!

The answer is it can be either (but obviously not both; what would be the point) depending on how you wire it. Without a Neutral Wire it is a Single Pole Lighted Handle (Lit when Load is OFF) while with a Neutral Wire it is a Single Pole Pilot Light (Lit when Load is ON). By the way, with a second switch like itself it can function in either of the above modes (Lighted Handle or Pilot Light) as a Three Way Switch.

I installed the switch and it works but the toggle light does not illuminate?

Sorry Rich. I installed the last one almost 5 years ago and can't remember how I wired it. Mine worked though-both switch and lighter toggle. As I remember, there was a wiring diagram in the box. Small folded piece of paper that I almost threw away with the box. Good luck-maybe a pro electrician can advise.

If the circuit is broken (load fails) does the toggle light stay on or goes out?

My one word previous answer may not be helpful. Properly wired, the light will be one when the switch is in the on position regardless of the load condition.
