Q: There are no directions with the product. How long do you let the goop liquid dry before running the dishwasher?

DIRECTIONS FOR UBER GOOP (LIQUID PVC) MAKE SURE YOU HAVE ADEQUATE VENTILATION BEFORE USING and please follow these instructions. Uber Goop Rack plastic paint Rack Repair for welded joints 1.Scrape/sand as much rust and loose rack coating off affected areas as possible. Use a medium grade sandpaper to rough up the surface of the existing rack coating next to the bare metal and wipe it with rubbing alcohol, allowing the Uber Goop to adhere better. NOTE: It is recommended you overlap the Uber Goop onto the existing coating about ¼ inch for a better seal. 2.Spread on goop, ENCIRCLING the wire. Let dry 1 hour. Put 2nd coat on and let dry 1 more hour. NOTE: Uber Goop dries QUICKLY. Replace cap IMMEDIATELY after use. Also, to help the goop last, slide thumb over bottle opening each time you pull the brush out. Also, if you get an accumulation of drying goop along the stem of the brush you can wipe it off with a paper towel then replace brush and close tightly. Uber Goop for Tine Repair with vinyl caps 3.Make sure as much rust as possible has been removed from tines. Again, rough up the old coating and clean with rubbing alcohol as in step 1 above. NOTE:If the tip of the tine is TOO rusted….you might want to simply cut part of it off with wire cutters to blunt the end…then glue on the cap. 4. Turn the rack UPSIDE DOWN and DIP the tines into the bottle covering about a quarter inch…then immediately put on the cap. You can coat 2 or 3 tines and then slide on the caps. Let tines dry 2 hours. NOTE: CAPS WILL NOT STAY ON TINES DURING WASH IF NOT GLUED. Note: UBER GOOP can be thinned with acetone. RusSan Enterprises

Q: How can we know if this home-brew stuff is as safe as aquarium grade silicone sealant?

Two things. It's not "home-brew stuff". It has been around for more than 70 years. So, it has a long safety record. It was Uber Goop...before it was even called Uber Goop...and has been used to repair dishwasher racks for more than 40 years dduring which time there has never been a single incident anywhere where someone, young or old, in the short term or long term, was harmed. As far as fish tank silicone sealers...we don't deal in those kinds of products and so are not familiar with their chemical makeup. Here's what I do know. You probably wouldn't want to use silicone in your dishwasher...it's not made to take the heat. Hope that helps, RusSan Enterprises

Q: I have an old Bosch and the caps would fit perfectly on vertical tines, but the bottom horizontal rods are thicker. Is there a solution for those?

If I understand your question...in that the wire on the bottom is not rusted all the way through and you can clean the rust off a section...then here is a solution for EXTRA protection if you don't think Uber Goop alone is sufficient. Take a vinyl cap and snip the top off so it's open on both ends. Then cut it length wise. If you have to do this with two caps...do it with two. Then put Uber Goop on the wire you cleaned and immediately put the sliced cap over it like a hot dog. Make sure the side with the slice is facing toward the bottom of your dishwasher so you don't see it. Then...put a little more Uber Goop as a sealer in the slice......And you are done. Q: What kind of glue is used for the tine caps?

I used a small dab of the gray coating in the bottle that comes with the kit - although the plastic caps will fit snug without any adhesive. Paint all rusted & worn areas with the goop. It forms a bond that doesn't peel or wear off. The kit is well worth the price.
