Product Description A reluctant South Carolina farmer (Mel Gibson) is forced to fight the British in this adventure epic set during the time of the American Revolution. Nominated for 3 Academy Awards (2000) - including Best Cinematography, Best Original Score and Best Sound - The Patriot is a gripping tale of war and family, now fully remastered in 4K. desertcart.com Aimed directly at a mainstream audience, The Patriot qualifies as respectable entertainment, but anyone expecting a definitive drama about the American Revolution should look elsewhere. Rising above the blatant crowd pleasing of Stargate, Independence Day, and Godzilla, director Roland Emmerich crafts a marvelous re-creation of South Carolina in the late 1770s (aided immeasurably by cinematographer Caleb Deschanel), and Robert Rodat's screenplay offers the same balance of epic scale and emotional urgency that elevated his earlier script for Saving Private Ryan. Unfortunately, Emmerich embraces clichés and hackneyed melodrama that a more gifted director would have avoided. Instead of attempting a truly great film about the most pivotal years of American history, Emmerich settles for a standard revenge plot with the Revolutionary War as an incidental backdrop. On those terms, the film is engrossing and sufficiently intelligent, especially when militia leader Benjamin Martin (Mel Gibson) cagily negotiates with British General Cornwallis (Tom Wilkinson) in one of the most rewarding scenes. For the most part, the story concerns Martin's anguished quest for revenge against ruthless redcoat Colonel Tavington (played with snide relish by Jason Isaacs), and the rise to manhood of Martin's eldest son, Gabriel (Heath Ledger), whose battlefield honor exceeds even that of his brutally volatile father. At its best, The Patriot conveys the horror of war among innocent civilians, and the epic battle scenes, while by no means masterful, are graphically intense and impressive. And although Ledger's love interest (Lisa Brenner) is too bland to register much emotion, the focus on family (which frequently relegates the war to background history) provides a suitable vehicle for Gibson, who matches his achievement in Braveheart with an effectively brooding performance. --Jeff Shannon Review: Entertaining film - Entertaining film, one of Mel Gibsons best film Review: Good - Wonderful

An American classic, which has only improved over time
I was an admirer of The Patriot when I first saw it in the cinema -- but time has only reinforced the greatness of this film. I gave the Blu-ray extended cut a screening a few years ago, but the theatrical version (available on the 4k disc) is markedly superior (it is striking how much a few minutes of superfluous footage can slow a movie down). The theatrical cut is itself long, but flows extremely well, and ranks as one of the finest historic epics of all time. Mel Gibson's performance is one of his best, and rife with passion and stoic heroism. This picture was also a turning point in Gibson's career -- long the young, brash "leading man", Gibson's years were starting to show when he made this film, and this really informs the character of Benjamin Martin as a mature, ageing man, weathered by years (and the guilt of past misdeeds). Robert Rodat's script is outstanding -- better than his more-acclaimed Saving Private Ryan. The Patriot walks a fine line, managing to celebrate the struggle for, and triumph of, American independence -- without celebrating war itself. Indeed the film depicts the founding of America (and Martin's personal struggle) as hard-won, and strewn with sacrifice and loss. Jason Issacs is effectively despicable as the sadistic Colonel Tavington, yet his ruthlessness never strays outside the realm of believability (thank goodness Kevin Spacey's fee priced him out of this role!). A coterie of interesting supporting characters also populates the film -- in fact The Patriot has one of the best supporting casts ever. Not not a single one of them is uninteresting or superfluous, and they never once convolute or slow the narrative down. Caleb Deschanel's photography is a glory to behold -- and done full-justice in 4k. In fact this film looks better in its 4k transfer than it did in the theater. Deschanel bathes the film in a "period style" that looks and feels believable, but is also original in its use of lighting (as opposed to just cribbing the Barry Lyndon and Amadeus look, which most other period pieces have done). John Williams' score is a paragon of artistry, and one of his more unique efforts -- bursting with moments of soaring inspiration, but also elegiac introspection and tenderness, and nods to the music of the era. The Patriot truly is one of the finest and most moving pictures of recent decades, and film which is particularly relevant today -- when many in our culture have forgotten (or have not bothered to learn) why the United States is unique, and how its foundation changed the world (for the better).

A Worthwhile DVD
I'm not going to waste your time retelling , for the umpteenth time, what "The Patriot" is about, or its inaccuracies. Most of the reviewers before me have done a fine (and sometimes not so fine) job doing that already. Instead, I will explain why I feel this is a very good movie and would make a worthwhile addition to your DVD library. When a movie is historically accurate ("Gods and Generals," for instance), it gets panned because of the lack of political correctness, or it's too slow, or overly long, etc. When it isn't historically accurate ("The Patriot"), it still gets panned for not being historically accurate. You can't win! I found The Patriot to be an engulfing movie filled with suspense, excitement, humor, drama, and, dare I say it, enough historical accuracy for the viewer to get an understanding of the time and events in which this movie takes place. I guess what appeals to me most in this movie is the fact that they do not attempt to bring the late 20th century mores and morals (or lack of) into the 18th century, as too many of today's Hollywood flicks make it a point to do ...I had to laugh at the fact that these liberal do-gooders were so upset that there were children in "The Patriot" who actually were allowed to brandish a (gasp!) musket! C'mon people! This is supposed to be a movie representing life in the late 18th century Revolutionary War time. Kids with guns was as common and accepted as kids with skateboards today - more, in fact. These revisionist historians would prefer to 'Disney - fy' our history and remove any truths they deem politically incorrect. There are wonderful examples why this movie is slightly above many others when it comes to the period in time it is attempting to revise. For example, the old custom of 'bundling,' where one would lie in the same bed as their sweetheart fully clothed and sometimes restrained as to ensure no funny business could happen, takes place in this movie, as does some of the archaic language from the time period, used in the dialogue ("take me in his stead!"). It's these sort of subtle historical gems that helps me to overlook the inaccuracies of the battle dress - not that I am happy about that inaccuracy at all. But, unless you get a truly passionately produced movie ...we sometimes have to, unfortunately, settle for a bit less. But less is not always bad. One day, I hope someone does the Revolutionary War right and produces/directs the ultimate movie about the birth of our great nation...But, until then, "The Patriot" and "The Crossing" will have to do.
