Outstanding Value for the Money
This is a phenomenal pedal; it really makes your bass sound good. Some people have complained that the distortion basically starts with the "color" feature, but I think that's great. I wouldn't even use this without color on, because it just sounds so amazing. So, I'm really glad that the distortion is just adding dirt to that sound. It's extremely versatile and really brings out the tone. And at under $200; to even have a shot at getting something better than this, you would need to spend at least $300. Even then, it's going to be hit or miss until you get to $500 or more. But as many reviewers have pointed out, this pedal is good enough for any live performance setting (can't speak to recording, since I haven't used it for that).

Good pedal for live gigs
I have used this pedal for live gigs and band practice over 60 times in the last year. Some of the gigs are a 2 hour drive with the rest of the band's gear so being able to travel light is great. The build quality is excellent. The 9v battery is nice for when I didn't have enough time or space to plug in on a power cord. The output is clean. Half the time I run it into an amp, other locations it's straight into the PA. I can always get the sound adjusted to the other audio gear without having to change house settings or bug the audio guy during set up. It's got the main essential EQ and distortion I need for the mid 2000s punk/rock/metal, the push of a button I can switch itthe distortion off and play worship music. It's a good little box for practice to shape your general sound, live gigs with different audio equipment without having to drag your own amp everywhere, and it is totally affordable for what it delivers. I can add octave or compressor pedals, but honestly in a year I haven't been forced to. My gig bag has a Mitchell short scale bass I modded with EMG PJAX pickups wired at 18v, Ernie Ball cobalt heavy strings, live wire or Fender cables, a Fender Flash 2.0 tuner, and the MXR Bass D.I.

Does what it says it does and more!
I bought this DI box and EQ/Distortion pedal because I often play through unfamiliar and older amps when I travel by air to venues. This box allows me to emulate the two channels I have on my Aguilar head at home by providing clean and distorted channels. Including the Bypass option, I have three sounds accessible by footswitch. When playing through an amp with no DI, this gives me the option to DI into the board rather than mic the amp. All the EQ, color and noise gate controls work as advertised. This box allows me to pack light and know I will get the sound I want regardless of the amp or bass (active or passive) that I will use at the venue (we usually rent rather than ship equipment). One note: If you use effects they have to be connected ahead of this pedal otherwise they will not be available via the DI to the board. To round out my travel kit I use a Boss TU-3 Chromatic Pedal Tuner which allows me to mute while tuning, a MXR Bass Envelope Filter Effect Pedal and an old Digitech Chorus.

Great for clean tones - not so flash for Dirt
My main reason for purchase was to get a bass specific EQ section since I run my bass through a tube guitar head for gigs, and to have the same signal going to FOH as that going to my amp. I've done a couple of live shows and recording sessions with this box now and have been very happy with the clean tone it produces with the colour switch engaged. I've kept the EQ knobs pretty flat on it, just the occasional small tweak to taste for the room when playing live. It's great being able to run it on phantom power too, one less battery or adapter to worry about. The EQ shape with the colour switch engaged is especially nice when playing with a pick, it has just the right amount of punch and attack, with plenty of bottom end too. I don't rate the distortion very highly, It's a bit hairy for my liking, and bottom end completely disappears when you kick it in. So it's not a great distortion pedal, but it is a very nice preamp/EQ/D.I. box, and for that it's worth the money.

Best $140 you'll spend on your bass rig
I was on the fence between the Tech 21 bass DI and this one, but the overdrive option sold me. We've actually been using this pedal for our bass player for the last few months, and it absolutely rocks. We play a lot of 90s/2000 heavy rock, and the clean sound and the overdrive are absolutely bomb. We play a lot of Tool/SOAD/Godsmack sort of music, and this thing nails it. To top that off, I pulled this thing out for a country recording session at my home studio last weekend, and coupled with a decent active bass, this thing just nails a solid, tasty recorded tone without a lot of fuss or EQ/Compression after the fact. So for $60 less than the Tech 21, with a built in noise gate for the overdrive? Buy the damn thing before they wise up, seriously!

Awesome pedal true multi-function
Had the SansAmp programmable DI, this is better. This pedal truly does SEVERAL useful and valuable functions, and does them well. The dual footswitches can act as 2 channels, IN ADDITION to your natural signal path when in true-bypass. The distortion is a slightly more modernized version of traditional fuzz, which suits me perfectly. This even has a gate and trigger ! Built like a tank, knobs do not turn too easily (a good thing) this is a very well thought out pedal and when priced <$150 presents an incredible value IMHO.

Mejor que el Sansamp
Tengo el Sansamp y este MXR. Me gustó más el MXR. Más sencillo más rápido de configurar sin tanta bronca. Se tenía que decir y se dijo.

Must have!
Fantastic pre-amp for the money. Prefer it over far more pricey options. Love the contour button that scoops the mids! Sounds amazing through my amp or direct to front of house!

Simple, noiseless and lots of tone shaping options
Very happy with this. Oozes quality. I'm still experimenting with the range of tones it can do. I'm using it between my floor pedals and the out front PA system, so no bass amp or cab in my chain (monitoring via IEM from the desk). Firstly, the bass mid and treble controls work well and with no noise (in any mode), and they cover a lot tone shaping possibilities. MXR seem to have designed and placed the tone frequency controls in just the right tonal areas. Using just the clean channel is good but when you use the color button there's a big scooped boost which sounds instantly great. I'm going for a mostly clean tone, so I don't really need the gain distortion channel, but I'm finding that if I use the gain channel but with the gain blended right down low, it sounds nicely warm but not distorted. Its a nice tone to work with for most styles. The gain channel automatically uses the color scoop/boost, so sometimes I'll roll back the bass and treble just a little to compensate. My only negative so far, is that I was hoping I'd hear more of the "gate", but I don't hear much happening. I think its affecting the gain distortion trigger which I'm not really using. I was expecting more of a traditional noise gate which would auto switch off the output when I'm not playing - its not that. The gate LED goes on and off but the output stays live. Sometimes I have both hands off the bass, so a proper gate function would have been better for me. Any of that doesn't take off the fact that I like using the MXR80. Its simple and noiseless with lots of tone shaping options. Strange it didn't come with a PSU, but it uses a common Boss / Dunlop type PSU, 9V DC tip negative. Its very low current (less than 200mA). Minor niggle, sometimes - in certain light conditions, its not so easy to see the LED indicators, but this device is the kind of thing you leave on anyway. Also no speaker simulator, but that's really (really) not a deal breaker.
