These are ok however they measure 5.35 mm inside and when a 5 mm led that actually measures 4.83 mm meet there is a lot of room for play and can be difficult to deal with. The nylon cups that accompany these sockets are the only thing helping this problem. If there is any vibration or bounce in the equipment then you better add some silicone or other adhesive to the unit to assure your diode ain't bouncing out of the socket.

The concept is good, but the design and execution could be improved. The interior length over which the inside diameter is 5 mm is very short and the tolerance on the ID isn't very tight. (Some 5 mm LEDs fell straight through.) Consequently, the LEDs/PDs tend to point off axis in a random direction. At best a mounted LED looks sloppy and unprofessional, at worst the LED may fall out the front or back of the holder. The retainer is a tapered plastic piece, which has a tendency to work itself out. I plan to use them to hold pairs of IR LEDs and photodiodes to construct broken-beam sensors for model trains and found it necessary to make and insert makeshift split collars out of 0.5 mm thick strips (2.5 mm W x 18 mm L) of poster-like paper to center the LEDs/PDs. The addition of these collars required that the length of the plastic retainer be trimmed 2.5 mm shorter. With those fixes the sensor operates at a separation of about 8-10 inches, but it's a lot of custom work. The first bag I ordered contained only 40 holders and 20 retainers, but the replacement bag contained the correct/advertised number of pieces (50 of each part). One holder was badly tarnished, which suggests that the holders may not hold up well in a damp environment.

There were only 34 holders in bag. Not very happy about it.
