Jake Gyllenhaal and Laura Dern star in October Sky, a touching and inspirational drama that's based on a true story. Working in the coal mines was an inescapable way of life in the small town of Coalwood, West Virginia in 1957. When high schooler Homer Hickam, Jr. (Gyllenhaal) sees the Sputnik satellite in the night sky, he dares to break * of the mines and reach for the stars. With the support of his teacher (Dern) and three friends, Homer sets out on an inspiring quest to build his own rocket. Overcoming a poor education, a tough father (Chris Cooper) and a series of misfires, Homer turns his dreams into reality in this incredible true story of hope, determination and triumph.

Great film. Not to be missed.
This is such an inspirational and aspirational film. Also despite the seemingly adult subject matters involved, the film was so well crafted that even my primary-aged children loved it and rated it 10/10. It is a true story apparently. Nothing is impossible. Reach for the stars. I believe all children should be given the chance to watch this. As an adult viewer I enjoyed it a lot as a film for its own sake too. Beautiful orchestral soundtrack as well. Pity it isn't well-known. Certainly deserves more notice.

An awesome film
As true stories go, this one has perhaps the least deviations from the facts, so even small details you think are the director's license, actually happened, so sit back and enjoy that inspiring story. The characters are engaging, it is funny and touching, the 'making of' is a real treat to watch after enjoying the movie. Suitable for all, but obviously, but anyone who marveled at the Space Shuttle will like this film by association.

Brillient
I bought this for a film night with five middle aged women. We all loved this film which is based on a true story and is very uplifting. I also watched it with my husband who also thought it was good. I then leant it to our neighbour to watch with his children. After watching it he commented that he hadn't thought he would like it but it was actually very good.

The power of a dream
Because it is based on a true story, it bears an authenticity that a novel doesn't. To see that success is often encouraged by "disinterested" people reminds us that not everyone has only their self-interests in mind. Perseverance pays.

A must See DVD, so many positive messages
This is an excellent DVD with so many positive message for the young people, stay in school, make progress, go to college.... My whole family watched this DVD and they were amazed and mesmerized, by the story. I went ahead and ordered the Coalwood Trilogy Books, as suggested by the author in his site. I always first watch the DVD and if I like it I buy the book that has more details. Well done Homer Hickam, keep making progress!!!

Rocket science brought to earth
Sad but true story about an inspirational teacher and an inspiring student from my alma mater WV. My only critique is that they should have kept the original title from the author's book - more apt.
