Good value, excellent content
This book is thorough! There is plenty of explanation, and it's full of photos. The author takes you through several paintings, showing you the steps along the way. Sometimes I wish there were more photos of the steps, as she jumps from one step to the next rather abruptly. The only thing better would be a video. The paintings are attractive and inspiring. And the low price of the book is a bonus.

nice for watercolor portraits
A nice little book, easy to read and use, which provides the reader with various portrait projects that the author has completed. It is a step-by-step explanation of what colors the author used and with what type of application. I read this book by highlighting and circling key words and ideas for my future watercolor paintings. If you are a beginner or intermediate watercolor painter, this is a very good book to assist in your learning to paint portraits.

Interesting and helpful
I think this is geared to a painter with some experience, but it is an informative book for someone who is exploring portraiture. Parts are overwhelming, but interesting.

Small but Awesome
I almost didn't buy this book because so many people said it was very small. It's actually 9 1/2 by 6 1/2 inches. I would also like it to be bigger, but wow! It's packed with info! I'm finding it very helpful. She walks you through the steps (with pictures) of several different portraits that vary from different ages of the subjects and different skin tones. How to paint each of the backgrounds and the clothing is included in each example. I find it to be just what I was looking for as I begin my journey of painting portraits. I hope she comes out with more books on the subject! Recommend to anyone attempting to paint real people

An excellent handbook
I discovered this author when she won a prize at a watercolor show I attended, and I loved her painting. Found this book on Amazon and glad to have it. Yes, would prefer that it be bigger but, on the other hand, the smaller size makes it handy for me to take along with me to painting class and refer to when I need to. It's full of really masterful watercolor portraits that inspire me, as well as good direction regarding choice of colors, backgrounds, composition, and other topics.

Good info but too small
This is a really good book on portrait painting. However, it's small size means none of the images are very large. That's the reason for the 3 star. If the book was in a lager format, like osst of the art books I have purchased, it would be better. I like to paint watercolors, but I haven't tried portraits yet in painting--at least not real portraits, although I've done some Jane Davenport types. I am hoping this book will help me when I decide I have reached that skill level.

Overall good instruction
I think this is a good instruction book for watercolor portraits. Covers materials, techniques, and skin tones. Step by step instruction (average 5 to 7 steps). My one complaint about this book is the size. It is 6 1/2 by 9 1/2. Some pages have more than one instructional "step" photo on them, which makes them rather small and not as easy to see the details as you would with a larger format book.
