This is a fun overview of the irresistible "gentle giant," the Irish wolfhound ...
Irish wolfhounds could be everything anyone ever wanted in a dog, but they are BIG. This "gentle giant" is gentle, loving, smart, and very loyal. The wolfhound is "one of the largest breeds of dogs" and can "grow as big as a small pony." If you are an apartment dweller, you might want to pass on the irresistible Irish. The largest dogs in the breed "can be 36 inches (91 cm tall) and weigh as much as 175 pounds (79 kg). Just get out your yardstick, hold it next to you, and you'll get an idea of how tall they are. When you glance at the pictures in this book you'll be wowed at how huge they can be. Oh, and that 175 pounds? If you take "nineteen house cats" they'd balance the other end of the scale. The Irish wolfhound is an attractive dog that comes in many colors and can be a "solid color or brindle."Of course as the name indicates, they originated in Ireland. This regal dog was a favorite of "Ireland's kings and nobles." They were hunting dogs and could easily chase down "wolves and large Irish elks." In the fascinating historical overview of the Irish wolfhound you'll learn many things, including the fact that they are "the mascot of the Irish Guards." The American Kennel Club (AKC) lists them as part of the hound group as they were once hunters. Of course the author stresses that the Irish wolfhound, although quite irresistible, may not be for everyone and gives several considerations to think about. They are great with kids, but you may have to think about that "room" factor. In this book you'll also learn about the need for proper veterinarian care, early training, its feeding needs, grooming needs, you'll see a list of things you should have on hand before bringing your pet home, and you'll learn many other things about the Irish wolfhound. This is a fun overview of the irresistible "gentle giant," the Irish wolfhound. There are photographs galore of both full grown dogs and pups throughout the pages of this book. The appeal factor is high, but a few of these photographs and reproduced art works will give the reader an idea of just how large the Irish wolfhound is. One of my favorites is a shot of one resting his paws on his owner's shoulders. He's easily a full head taller. Of course if you are planning to add an Irish wolfhound to your household, it would be wise to purchase a breed specific book. There are numerous, small, informative sidebars scattered throughout the book, including one on the massive Champion Cotswold. In the back of the book is an index, a glossary, and additional recommended book and website resources to explore. Additional downloadable educational resources are available on the publisher's website. This book courtesy of the publisher.
