One Discolors in the Dishwasher
This should have been a five-star and fireworks review. It would have been if I had only bought one of these cheese slicers. In my considered opinion this is the ONLY cheese slicer on the market that is worth a dang. It is EXACTLY the cheese slicer I remember from my childhood, way, way back in the previous century. That unit may still be around somewhere doing its modest little job perfectly without any drama at all. It was bulletproof.Ever since then every cheese slicer I have had the misfortune to own has been a weak and too-soon-mortal imitation. I grew resigned to the fact that cheese slicers had become throw-aways. Nobody cared to make them well enough to last. When I found this guy on Amazon I recognized it instantly. No mistaking its simple, rugged design. Made in Germany? Well yes, of course! And I was not at all disappointed. It did its simple job wonderfully well. So satisfying. And it even went through the dishwasher and came up sparkling. Like new!It was the second unit that broke the magic. Yes, I bought another one. I expected the same Teutonic quality, and it was all there...EXCEPT when I put it through the dishwasher. Everything came out sparkling EXCEPT the roller. That came out gray.My guess is that the handles and the rollers of these units are made from aluminum. Aluminum that is 'anodized' to keep it from discoloring. 'Cept the roller on my second unit got a defective coating. The first one continues to come out of the dishwasher looking brand-spanking new. Not so its cousin. Both slicers work wonderfully well. Just one isn't so pretty.Darn.******************Update, May 2017I ended up throwing away the defective cheese slicer. The 'gray' from the roller was transferring onto the cheese. But after some deliberation I decided to order one more slicer. The new slicer has been through the dishwasher a number of times now, without any discoloration. And the original slicer continues to come out looking like new.For now it appears that my second slicer was an isolated dud. At least it can be hoped. I'd love it if my other slicers would retain their like-new condition for years to come. If you choose to buy one I hope you will not be disappointed.

Westmark German produces a sturdy, well designed cheese slicer.
Recently sent as a gift to my quality-minded aficionado of "good cheese" loving son-in-law, I scored a huge hit. Constructed of stainless steel, the slicer is comfortable to hold and slices through both soft and semi-hard cheeses without issue. The cutting wire is mounted just-right tight so it smoothly glides through cheeses. I'm expecting my SIL will get great service with this sturdy, well designed and constructed tool from a German manufacturer. Competitive pricing, built to last. Best of all: no plastic!

German quality is worth it
In looking for a cheese slicer an Amazon, I had to wade through tons of Chinese made ones. Noticed many came with extra wires. Made me suspicious - why would you need several wires unless they broke easily? Saw this german made one. Germany is known for their high quality mechanical products, so I decided for just a dollar more than the Chinese ones, to get this. Handle is aluminum alloy, simple and sturdy. Wire is stainless steel. first thing I tried was to slice aged Gouda. This had a pretty hard rind. The wire stretched quite a bit, and I had to apply a lot of pressure to get thru the rind, and the wire held up. At that point I knew this would last a long time. The wire cut through the rest of the cheese like butter. I dont plan on using this to go thru rind like this - its very hard to even cut with a knife. But it passed my test. buy it!
