EXPERIENCE IT
Karen Ranney delivers another installment in the Highland Lord series with her artful, signature narrative that makes the reader want to read every syllable of every word. Every word has a purpose, therefore, one doesn't just read about Ranney's characters but experiences them.In wonderful Ranney style, the main characters come into the story with dark, torturous pasts, which makes them needy but also abrasive. The reader FEELS Jeanne's lonliness and rejection and FEARS Douglas' revenge, as well as SENSES their soulful attraction, especially through their sexual encounters. Likewise, one LOOKS around every corner to protect Jeanne from the lurking dangers of her father's greed and Mr. Hartley's lust. Through Margaret, one SEES trust and hopefulness and CONNECTS those qualities to Jeanne's tortured body and spirit. Best of all, Douglas MacRae saves Jeanne (and himself) with his MASTERFUL leadership, PROFOUND love, and GENTLE touch. Experiences! Those who truly appreciate Ranney's multi-layered writing style will not want to miss reading this multi-layered story of Douglas and Jeanne, so in love that time, distance, torture, and regret can not keep them apart.

Karen Ranney is magnificent!!!!!!
Just finished this book, the last in the series of 5 books on the McRae family. What a book! I am going back and reading all 5 again. Karen brings everyone back in the McRae family for this beautiful and touching ending of the youngest McRae brother - Douglas. I have read a lot of Scottish romance including all of Hannah Howell's books and I have to say Karen Ranney is a genius. Her writing style is so flowing and we learn so much about this time period. I am kind of glad I didn't discover her earlier as I have a lot of her reading to look forward to.

a good ending to the highland lord series
The characters were believable and if a bit sad and angry. I realize some avoidance is necessary for stories to have som length, but I prefer confrontation with the truth to fear of rejection, so this is the one flaw in the story line that I see not so much in the hero's actions but in the heroine's. Jeanne while gaining her courage in every other aspect of her life, could not face Douglas with her history, which to me made no sense because she had wanted him to rescue her. All in all a fairly good story however I enjoyed reading it and appreciated the family revisited. I would like to have seen Mary and Hamish vindicated and a more fitting punishment meted out to Charles Talbot.

Enjoy reading this!
Karen Ranney does a great job of writing a story with several themes, twists and turns. I think this is the best of the series. Hard to put down.

So In Love: Highland Lord Series
An excellent read. Karen Ranney writes wonderful Scots historical novels. She knows her Scots history and intertwines the real with the fantasy expertly. I enjoy her writing immensely.

The End
This book takes place some 40 years after Book one. Douglas, the youngest of the MacRae brothers is the MMC, and his childhood sweetheart, Jeanne is the MFC. The daughter of a wealthy French Comte, Jeanne bears a child out of wedlock and is sent to a convent where she suffers deprivation, starvation, and harsh punishment. She believes that the daughter she had is dead.Douglas, thinking Jeanne abandoned their child to starvation, harbors a bitter hatred even though he believes Jeanne died when their chateau was razed by a mob just prior to the Terror in France. Then he sees her, as a governess to a bus ness associate in Edinburgh.Long story short, Douglas rescued their daughter and has raised her for 9 years and offers Jeanne the position of governess to their child.Plot twists and turns, and it all works out in the end.The saddest thing is that Ian & Leitis MacRae are lost when their ship, Ionis, is shipwrecked travelling back to Nova Scotia. All of the brothers, their wives, and children make appearances. While good, these characters don’t seem to have the depth that those in the first couple of books have.It is a somewhat disappointing end to this series of books.
