Great product that helps keep me sane!
I was introduced to this product via a fellow art teacher and it has served me well. I teach 480 K-3 students art and use it for maintaining grades for them. The first page features a manilla folder page with pockets on either side. I use this to keep my schedule for the beginning of the year, half-day schedules, and special information such as grading scales. My school operates on quarters so the perforated pages are a synch to use once I write in my student's names and their associated class/section. I simply fold at the perforation and I am set to go when the quarter ends. I only have 20 (maybe 22) kids per class so I am not hampered by the height of the lines where I have to write my kids names because I can spread them out every-other-line. (A colleague of mine actually writes her student's names so they take up two lines!) There eight double-sided pages with two 45-space grids at the back for seating. I haven't used this so I can't attest to its effectiveness. CHANGES I WOULD LOVE TO SEE: I would love it if the manufacturer used shading on alternating lines. It would make instances where people have to use all 50 lines much easier because they could scan to the right by following the shading. An additional change that I think would be helpful focuses on the spaces at the top where you are to write in assignments. The space is very small for my purposes which usually entail writing a brief description as well as the date. This isn't a deal-breaker for me as I simply write out of the box to the top edge of the page. I assume that most teachers would simply be writing the date here. FINAL VERDICT: So, is this the perfect solution? No. But, it is a near-perfect fit for me. My district uses an online system for grading; however, I learned early in my educational career that you NEVER trust online systems. Keeping a paper-backup such as this record book is essential. Roaring Spring fits the bill in my book (no pun intended!) for effective record keeping for teachers.

Roaring Spring Teachers' Record Roll Book is the best!!!!
I teach college French, usually 4-5 sections each semester of up to 20 students per class. We generally have at least 5 different components feeding into student grades, and each gets recorded per chapter (5-6 times per semester per component) plus we keep attendance. So when I say that this gradebook is more roomy than any other I've ever used, you see what I mean! The 8.5X11 format is easy to keep track of (I always had trouble losing those smaller gradebooks) and means the blocks to write in are a more practical size as well, well suited to almost any points format you use. Anyone who wants it there are seating charts in the back (I don't use them) and there's a pocket in the front for incidental docs you might want to keep handy. The name list section on each page is serrated for easy removal to organize multiple pages for the same class. The spiral makes it really easy to use at the computer as I enter my grades on our electronic course site. Moreover it is always really affordable - I usually buy 3 or 4 to hold me for several semesters. For a while this gradebook was harder to find - so glad it seems to be readily available again! I have used these gradebooks now for about 5 years straight and will never change as long as they keep making them!

Very flexible and versitile, good for college teaching
This is the best record book I've found for teaching in college. While many of my colleagues are understandably moving to electronic record-keeping, especially with increasing demands (and sometimes requirements) to use online course management tools like Blackboard and Canvas, I still like to keep records the old-fashioned way. Among other reasons, It minimizes errors (I will occasionally enter the wrong grade as a typo, but I won't write "0" instead of "9" in my grade book, so it's more accurate.) This book is a fairly simple spreadsheet, allowing me to define the fields as I wish. Since I don't track most of the information that grade school teachers do (parents contact info, etc., those types of fields are wasted paper, and most other grade books have all kinds of pre-defined fields that are designed for K-12 needs. I also like the narrow rows, which allow me to leave to rows per student and still have plenty to accommodate up to 21 students on a page. The number of columns always accommodates the number of assignments that I have in a given semester, and it is perfect for tracking attendance for a 16-week term (we have 30-31 class meeting days, and I think there are about 32 columns plus two sum columns on the far right, and, of course, the name column on the left. Pretty basic. I just wish there were better color choices and the ability to select the color that I want. Most sellers just pick a color at random and send it. I color coordinate all of my office supplies for practical as well as aesthetic purposes, so it's a bit of a bummer that I can't pick a color.

Only a few design suggestions
We underestimate the value of an old fashioned gradebook. This helped me stay on top of grading last year. It’s durable yet slim and light enough to carry and not take up too much space. It has perforated pages that make moving on to a new section easy — you don’t have to write students names down again every time. My biggest complaint is that I wish it t could be broken down into sections, or that the perforated sections of the page were smaller to tear, if that makes sense? I felt like I was wasting a lot of paper. Still, great if you’re looking for a non technical way to track grades (that you can then use to easily track in your computer).

My absolute favorite gradebook!
I teach middle school and this is my favorite gradebook. In past years, I purchased this at a store. I loved it so much that I went straight to Amazon this year to purchase it instead of searching in stores. It is a pretty straightforward gradebook. I love the pocket folder in front for important papers. I also love that it has a lot of lines that fit many students in a class and still leaves room at the bottom of the page for notes. The place to write each students name is very wide. This lets me note parents names and phone numbers next to the student or keep track of other information. The book has many pages so I can fit all five classes for six semesters each, and still have pages left over. Perfect!

Old-school gradebook
I have been using these grade books forever, even though I am now required to use on-line grade books. There are plenty of spaces/columns so you can set it up as you want. Depending on how many classes you teach a semester, they last a couple of years. If you like having a hardcopy gradebook, this is the one to get.
