Jerry Lee Lewis -- Greatest Hits: Piano/Vocal/Chords

So 40 years ago I was a touring mission playing the 50's and 60's rock n roll stars. Some of these tours were packaged so that you might have four or five stars on stage that night and those of us who made up "the band" had to know the standards and then some. Though I'm good at reading charts, especially in the studio, I had to learn all of this material by ear. We didn't tour with Jerry Lee but everyone else wanted to play his tunes as part of a set or one of his versions of someone else's hit. I had a love hate relationship with Jerry Lee's music back then. I loved listening to it and loved playing it when I had it down pat. Listening to records over and over and trying to figure out what he was doing lick for lick was fun at first. But when you get into Roll Over Beethoven and others like that, you'd better bring your A game.I bought this book on a whim. Another keyboard player told me that it was the real deal. Some of the transcriptions could use a little more nuance for the parts and solos. But there are others that are dead nuts on. If you want to play some difficult material as it was played, this is a worthy book to work into your repertoire. Just make sure that your hands are strong and can endure some physical playing.

Jerry Lee Lewis is the king of the piano. You can't touch this guy. I love Jerry Lee Lewis. He has a million albums and I try to buy them whenever I find them. I've got about 25 of them and they're all great. This is not an exaggeration. I've bought them all over the country, here in LA, New Orleans, Baton Rouge, you name it. Any store that has a country section, I'm scouring for some JLL. Anyway, I thought it would be great to learn to play some of his country songs. Man, they are tough. It's amazing that they were transposed at all because he is such a flamboyant player. He throws it around like Oscar Peterson. It's a bit out of my league at this point, but I'm working up to it. If you love Jerry Lee Lewis than this is a must own if your a big fan. The piano playing is intermediate, to advanced, to you playing Jerry's solo's. If you feel you can play like Jerry than by all means give it a try. There are a lot of his country songs that he did after his rock n roll records, and there is the classic Lewis songs, "Great Balls of Fire", and "Whole Lot of Shaking going on."

I love it, I am trying to get wife into playing early rock and country/bluegrass. Fun to play together.

Love this book! Nice big fat chords (be warned: these are the piano components, not arrangements of the full songs with piano fills for vocals or other instruments). Some nice surprises in here that are not JLL songs, but he did cover.

My pianist son loves this collection of classics by Jerry Lee Lewis. The printed music is fairly easy to learn and fun to play.
