Nice unit for climbing hills, but controller is a simple on-off button.
Motor was a Bafang 250 watt geared front hub motor, and it works quite well. The installation was easy and the battery pack, which comes in a sack, mounted easily in the triangle of the frame on my men's style bike. The battery is a small lithium battery pack of 24 volts, apparently some set of small cells connected in series. There is, however, no throttle on the controller but rather a simple off-on button, which is why I rated it 4 stars. The button is easily attached on the handlebars and will give maximum power when pushed, but it is spring-loaded and you must hold it down as you climb a hill. But that makes this set up not really usable for flat terrain cruise support, which was one of my goals. Thus, I will probably purchase a motor controller with either a thumb or twist grip throttle to make this kit more generally useful.

Eletric Bike Batteries Fail, Batteries Wont Work
I bought two lithium battery kits to take to Brazil. Ever since the beginning the range was very limited, not even close the 20 miles with assistance that I was promised on the website. Me and my wife ride from 7 to 8 miles at a time, and we usually use it just for passing other bikes, or in any case of emergency. I wasn't happy, but I could live with it, but quickly both batteries started to lose their performance (which already started out bad.) I contacted Hill Topper and they told me that I have bought those kits from some other company, I was not able to find the company on Amazon anymore. I checked the battery case and it says cleanrepublic.com, I noticed that they have a lot affiliates, I have been checking their website FAQs, forums, and I'd notice that they do have a lot of excuses for their batteries, after looking around for a solution to the problem without losing the investment I gave up and bought a different kit, another lithium kit for both bikes. I cannot tell you how happy we are, we are now able to ride for hours and still have both batteries almost fully charged. So if you want a piece of mind, there are other kits out there, smaller ones, lighter ones, cheaper ones that will do a much better job. Only gets one star because motor works just fine.

Great assist against the wind or up moderate hills, highly recommend bigger motor for commuters
This motor works great for assisting my 11 mile commute to work. It does have a good amount of torque for going up gentle to moderate hills at a good 10+ mph pace. For steeper hills, I always pedal, because it noticeably slows down below 10 mph, maybe 7 miles per hours. I used to take over an hour to bike to work, but now it takes about 40 minutes, while I still peddle vigorously. Time savings is the main reason I bought this motor. I probably should have got a slightly bigger motor, because I wish my commute home was shorter. Going home is more up hill, so it takes about an hour.I like the power output, because pedaling still increases my speed by a few mph. I don't want a motor so powerful, that pedaling is just irrelevant. I love bicycling and the effort of pedaling. The motor does make noise, but it is not obnoxious. Just a werring sound.I have an old steel mountain bike, so my wrists bear a lot of my weight and they have to be comfortable on the bars. So after holding the button, my wrists start hurting. I have found a way around this. I put the button under the front derailer shifter thumb lever and that holds the button nicely. I thought this might be risky, but it seems safe after trying it.Installing the wheel had only one complication. My forks are big round steel tubes, so I added a couple pedal washers to give it clearance from the hub. The hub is rather wide. The pedal washers were as much spacing I could add, and it just barely clears, within a hairs width.I bought the 10 mile range lithium battery. It lasted my 11 mile commute home with a few small hills within only light pedaling on my part. The battery is just thin enough to put between my legs on the top tube. The clips and straps are easy to use and hold well.The good: torque, increased speed and acceleration for holding speed against wind or up moderate hills, easy install, simple, discrete (most people couldn't tell it has a motor), still feels like a bicycle, light enough to pick upThe bad: ergonomics of button, could use more power on hills ( I weigh about 160 lb + 30 lb bike/cargo)Update: I loved bicycling so much during the summer, I bought some studded Schwable "winter" model tires and put on a set of full fenders. With this set up I will be able to ride all winter! If I bring the battery inside to keep it warm the battery life still has a good range. I really should have got the bigger battery and motor. I didn't know how much I would be using the bicycle. The motor really makes me ride much more often. I can't recommend this motor or the bigger motor enough. It will get you on the bike so much more.Update: since working the night shift I have not been riding. If I had gotten the bigger motor bicycling home would have been more feasible, but as it is, I need to be getting to bed at 4am instead of 6 am when I bicycle.

My life is changed :)
I love to bike. But I live in San Francisco, a super hilly city and I have a daughter I like to carry with me. So for the past few years, I've been limiting my biking to the one flat street near me.Enter this great electric kit..! I'm virtually unstoppable now!!My only con (hence the 4 star review and not 5) is that San Francisco suffers from pretty bad bike theft... And I have to take my battery pack with me everytime I park. Which is quite inconvenient, considering I still need to unstrap my toddler, lock my bike and put the battery pack away all while making sure my toddler doesn't run to the street.I ended up taking the kit to my bike shop for installation, as my original front wheel gave me trouble unscrewing it, but if it wasn't for that, it is very easy and straightforward and I should have been able to do it by myself.Now onto figuring out how to attach the battery pack permanently to my bike...

Wheel was bent.
Wheel was bent & rubs on brake pad so it’s not useable until I can take it to a bike shop to have the wheel straightened.
