A truly excellent guide for professional and hobbyist model makers.
I've been a professional model/diorama maker for 8 yrs and this book opened my eyes to a staggering amount of new techniques and ideas. The prose is comfortably old fashioned and the descriptions are clear and easy to understand. The photography is just as good, and the book covers a wide variety of aspects for model making. It is a structure guide principally, but it briefly covers foliage. It could have omitted that section, but even there it provided me with some ideas that I hadn't considered. If it had any faults - and I don't think it does - it is that some sections are brief since it is so comprehensive. Saying that, where it is brief, it provides sufficient coverage to allow the reader to explore the topic in more detail on their own. (The brass etching section is a good example.)One possible difficulty is that Mr. Neat uses Kappa foam for a variety of projects, and it is impossible to obtain Kappa foam from what I can determine. And I have looked hard for it! :) But other materials can be substituted depending on the project if the modeler is familiar with materials such as balsa foam for example. If you are a professional model maker it is a MUST have. If you're a hobbyist it's a very strong recommendation. It might be more than you were looking for, but you will never be wondering about how to tackle a project with this book by your side.I really can't say enough about it. I have other reference materials on my shelf, but no other compares to this book. Kudos to Mr. Neat for providing such an outstanding book.

a fabulous book on building miniature sets
I have browse read this 2-3 times and likely I need to learn to read art books in a a-z method. as an artist I read by visuals, I bought this with a short review of a book at a library or in someones personal library. this was an immediate interest and I located this book and ordered it as soon as I had the funds, this book is high on my list of relevant materials.

Excellent Overview
This book is a gold mine. No, it doesn't have everything there is to know, but it certainly opens the door. Having come to this subject as an amateur making stop action films in my dotage, I found this a treasure. And, by the way, an online search revealed much material by the author to supplement the material here. The only negative here is that some of the materials the (English) author suggests are not available in the United States, so that's a bit frustrating.

Helpful for set design for the stage!
Nice reference for Model-Making for theater sets! It's always helpful to look at how other people are approaching a craft. While you may not be able to duplicate materials, the ideas are worth exploring.

Fantastic and insightful
I have taught Art & Design for 21 years. Although this is specifically directed to stagecraft, any model maker will find a wealth of knowledge and resources. Impressive.

Great book! Bad writing
Great book! Bad writing. I love this artist and all of his online articles! but i think the editor dropped the ball on this book. I really wanted to take a red pen to this book and send it back to the editor. but in all fairness it has a lot of great info and lots of wonderful resources for the UK. other wise i would have given all five stars!

Three dimensional model-making methods and materials
I have been interested in films and the process of making them since I was a kid. This book is biased toward models for the film industry which is unique. There is a lot of modelmaking instruction for model railways and war games but very little for films and museums .
