It probably could, although I have not tried. The glass slides up and down... so it could be a mess if someone picked it up the wrong way. I suppose you could hot glue the glass on the bottom to be safe.

How big is the slot at the top? Can you fit large shells in it?

Small to medium size shells fit. Nothing big.

Does this have a hinged back that opens, like the other ones, for larger shells?

Yes it does. This can hold a LOT of shells or several large ones. Easy prongs open the back of the box and also has opening at the top. Hope this was helpful.
