Q: is this item lockable? if yes does it lock the bike or the holder to the cross bars? Thanks for your quick response.

The item locks both to the bike (it locks the turn handle which operates the clamp to the bike frame) and to the roof rack (at one holder location ony).

Q: would this work w/ any set of cross bars or do they have to be from BMW?

I know the bmw cross bars have a slot in them and that's where the rack slides into and locks down. However, the rack is made by Thule, so it may work with other Thule crossbars that have the slots.

Q: Is this the current model with the Curved base rail, or the one pictures with the straight rail?

It is curved. if you have an E46 (99-05) be careful...I purchased this bike rack with the base rails from this seller by clicking on "buy both" and didn't read the fine print. The rail system is for an E90 even though the pic is for the older model. I ended up having to ship it back and pay $43 for shipping.
