My REMO loyalty took a hit on this one.
I'm a Remo guy through and through. Not necessarily because they're the best (let's be honest, all drum head manufacturers are pretty good) but because I like the brand, the history, the logo, and thus I'm unabashedly brand loyal. Chock it up to good marketing. However, this Evans EMAD kick drum head is excellent, and I'll definitely be sticking with this thing. At 16 inches, my bass drum is very small, but it packs a punch and this head allows me to tune it as low as possible without having to worry about a flattened-deadness or too much boomy overtones. Having meticulously tuned the resonance and attack head to each other, the bass thumps and has a nice beefy tone while still feeing clean and resonant. However, like with any head, you need to tune them properly or they'll sound awful -- no matter the size of the drum, quality of the drum set, or type of head. Tuning not only the head itself properly but in conjunction with the resonance head is absolutely key. Once you get the tuning down (I watched a lot of youtube videos) this head is killer and I highly recommend it.

Sounds great.
Muffle system allows just the right amount of tonal resonance while controlling unwanted overtone. Combining with muffle ported Emad resonant head (I use Blk. Onyx), sound great and looks badass. I use this system on all three of my kits' basses. They are EXPENSIVE, but I haven't found anything to compare. I like the Emad 2 for my style and type of music, but if you're a lead footed hard rock player get the Emad 3 which is thicker. but a little less responsive. You don't want to put your foot through one of these. If you can afford it, get the batter and resonant head. For me, the sound was worth the money.

Turns a tom into a kick!
I modified my 16" tom to a kick drum and loved the set up but never could get the tom to sound like I was hoping until I got this head. Now I've got a great, tight, punchy and I'm loving it!

READ THIS before buying !!!!!!
Absolutely what I was looking for as a second floor Tom. I use a DW 16x16 shell for this head. It is super punchy and offers a short low end sustain perfect for recording and even live with little EQ needed to produce the perfect sound. What I recommend if using for floor Tom: Expect a punchy short sustained sound If you use a 16x14 shell expect less tone The deeper the shell the better tones you’ll get It’s originally a bass drum head.... so don’t expect tones like the EC2S or G2. Seems like most people on here expected it to sound like what they hear on YouTube, but forgetting the extensive post production they do to get those tones... As for the head by itself with our EQ, it’s 100 times better than I was expecting

Works well, doesn't dampen reverb as well as expected.
Works well, fits perfectly. Reverberation is still a problem even with the dampeners installed. Better dig out the pillow and put it back in the drum.....

Best I've heard for a 16" bass drum!
I purchased two of these 16" EMADs (with tom hoop) for my Tama Cocktail Jam kit, which has a 16x6" bass drum. (My bass drum is customized to have batter AND resonant heads- from the factory, it has the batter head only.) I had tried various head combinations and wasn't really happy with anything I tried, no matter how I tuned and muffled it. These Evans heads blew me away. I have a Remo Kevlar beater patch on the batter head, and both heads are tuned very low. (Tip: use TightScrew tension rods; at very loose tunings, regular rods will rattle right out!) I have no muffling in the drum at all. It sounds amazing! It's hard to believe this low a pitch can come from such a tiny drum. Admittedly, it's not very loud acoustically, so I'm micing it with an Audix D6. The whole setup sounds very similar to my Tama 18" bass drum. I will definitely be buying more of this head!
