Does this controller require seprate drivers for the stepper motors?

Separate stepper motor drivers are required. This controller outputs step and direction to the stepper driver. Size the stepper driver for you stepper motors. I use 2M860 Drivers for X and Y axis and an M542 driver for Z. Yours may be different depending on your supply voltage.

I have a pc controlled ncstudio cnc router. can i convert to this and get rid of the pc? do i need some software?

Should be no problem. You still need a pc and software to generate the G code. The G code is then transferred via a USB thumb drive to the Motion Controller. I have been using my controller for 2 years now without any problems. Installation was fairly easy. The connections to my stepper motor controllers and limit switches went well. Just transferred wires from my previous breakout board to the new controller. I did have a bit of try and try again for my spindle controller. I don't have good documentation on my Chinese variable frequency inverter. I bought this version of the controller https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07KJGM47P

Is there a history of these devices overheating usb drives? mine has killed several thumb drives so far.

So far I have had no problems with it burning up usb drives.
