I bought this recently, it wont stick on aluminum differential to check the backlash, trying using a vise grip but its not sturdy. I might return it.

It’s a magnet will never stick to stainless or aluminum

The base is sitting on a metal surface but the switch will not turn to "on" even with great force applie. Am I missing something or is this defective?

Will magnet attach to visegrips? Trying to check prop shaft on outboard aluminum lower unit.

Works best on a flat surface. You could clamp a flat piece of thick steel to the outboard's cavitation plate or fin using vice grips or clamps, then attach the magnet to that.
