In the 1920s, the physician and homeopath Dr. Edward Bach made his great discovery of the healing effects of various flower essences. Intense and revelatory, his experiences in nature resulted in thirty-eight “flower remedies.” He describes these as bringing courage to the fearful, peace to the anguished, and strength to the weak. But the therapeutic effects of the remedies were never limited to emotional states. They are equally effective in the treatment of physical disorders. Barnard begins the process of explaining this phenomenon. He describes how Bach made his discoveries and examines the living qualities of the plants in their context and how the remedies are actually produced. The result is remarkable. The author recounts his observations so that readers can experience, in a living way, the complex ways in which the remedy plants grow―their gestures and qualities, ecology, botany, and behavior. Review: Excellent Resource for Bach Flower Remedy Study! - Barnard's study of both the life and writings of Edward Bach as well as the plants themselves lead to a much deeper understanding of the Bach Flower Remedies. For instance, Bach initially wrote that pain was an indication for Impatiens, and only gradually came to realize the impatient nature of the person who needed the remedy. Barnard's own sensitivity to energy is clear in his description of the calming effect of the mauve Impatiens flowers in nature. This is exactly what the energy of these flowers feel like, as opposed to the redder ones of the same species. Barnard's detailed plant studies are a great help to understanding the mental states of those who need the remedies. For example, he points out that the flowers of White Chestnut are anything but geometric. They are arranged in a loose pyramid, irregular side branches holding 2, 3, or 4 flowers, the petals are irregularly shaped, and the flowers open at random, and the flowers start out white but redden on pollination, and only few are actually fertile -- a good physical picture of a mind with whirling, uncontrollable, repeating, usually fruitless thoughts. The book is clearly and amply illustrated with Barnard's own line drawings. Review: Excellent book - Was exactly the book I needed for a presentation on vine as an holistic student. Flower essences is something dear to me that I want to incorporate into my future work

Interesting and thorough examination of Bach flower remedies
This book was background study of the Bach flower remedies. Great illustrations and a poetic, sensitive way of addressing the flowers. A great addition to my references.

An Outstanding Addition to the Literature on Flower Essences
Flower Essences are not as well known as they should be. Though there is precious little scientific research to support their use, there is a great deal of practical experience to show that they can be often be very useful complements to other forms of therapy. This is an excellent book on the original Bach Essences. One would have thought that there is little new to be said about them, but there is much in the book that is new and original. Highly recommended.

My favorite book
I really enjoy the way the author describes the Remedies, Dr Bach and his thoughts and the emotions pertaining to each remedy. I have many books on the subject but this one is my favorite, by far.

Highly recommend
It is for those who love plants, the doctrine of signatures, AND Bach Flower Essences, not necessarily in that order. The author does a wonderful job and goes into good depth of the essences. He is a master.

Factual, knowledgeable and with great insight into the growth and 'meaning' of Bach's plants.
Not only does this book have all the information that you desire about each Bach essence, it also has plentiful references to Bach and his life and work. However the critical feature of this large book is unique: it explores the form and function of the plants involved. Each essence is placed in its historical context, and its physical appearance and 'signature' related to the attributes of the essence made from it, and hence the person needing that essence. That makes it ideal for anyone studing the use of Bach essences who wants to remember more easily what each essence is for. Bach essence making is also comprehensively dealt with ...both the sunlight and the boiling method. If you are training in Bach essences....buy it. If you are training in essences or are already a practitioner....you'll find it useful if you buy it. If you're just very interested in essences but dont fit into the categories above, this could be an interesting first book.....or one to expand your knowledge after reading other book/s. Me? I wouldn't be without it!

My pets health and well being is extremely important to me. Have found this book to be a valuable reference and resource of information for my pets (2x rescue puppies). Am very invested in learning and utilizing all natural holistic: techniques (reiki), herbal, essential oils and Flower Bach Remedies. My girls are totally worth it and the better health and well being the less vet visits or costs.

Magnum Opus.
If you are a Bach Flower Essence Practitioner or a mere enthusiasts this book is a must have. Julian Bernard goes deeper into the minds of the inventor Dr. Edward Bach and brings forward the complete picture of the essence which can be equally effective in the treatment of physical disorders apart from emotional states. The author needs to be appreciated for this highly scholarly work. Dr. Ramesh Shah
