Did the job for me
After reading the reviews, I was a little uncertain if I'd like this product. However, it appears that some reviewers may have a different situation or have some use problems. Notably, the "sticky" silicone gel spot has a plastic cover that must be peeled off before it has any positive effect on holding the unit in position. Note that this is NOT a "glue" but just a slightly sticky substance that increases the friction hold on the surface upon which it sits. The other factor is that the clamp system can exert an excess amount of pressure on the power adaptor, depending on the device you're trying to use. I have a Tom Tom GPS that came with another vehicle. I wanted to use it in my 'other' car as well. The battery life of the GPS proved to be insufficient for use beyond a couple of hours ... so I had to purchase a cigarette lighter 12vdc to USB power adaptor. Using the OEM connector, the GPS ended up resting on the connector on the bottom of the GPS -- this was obviously a bad situation as, over time, the pressure was likely to damage or break the connection on the circuit board. My first "fix" was to cut some styrofoam packing I had laying around to raise the GPS off the connector -- but this put the Dashboard Mount at the extreme of its opening and was a hassle to place and remove the GPS. I purchased a right-angle mini-USB cord (with regular USB at the other end) and that solved the problem. Using the jaws of the Dashboard Mount, the GPS stands up at an easy to see angle and the right-angle USB connection does not bottom out, removing stress on the connection.Once the connection problem was solved, I've found the iTrek Universal Dashboard Mount to work like a charm. It's heavy weight (it seems to be filled with sand) with the sticky pad get it to hold fairly well on the dashboard of my car. I imagine that under severe and violent maneuvers, that it would likely slide to one side or off the dash ... but under normal driving, it stays right where it's put.My only quibble -- as noted by some other reviewers -- is that the bottom has a slightly convex shape that makes the unit seem less stable that it appears to be in practice. A flat or concave bottom would probably 'grab' the dashboard more comfortably. However, even with this flaw, the holder has been satisfactory for my needs and allows me to quickly put the GPS out of sight when leaving the car parked, etc.

Satisfied
I looked around amazon for awhile before picking this mount. I took into consideration the average reviews, price, and how often I actually used my GPS unit, and picked this mount. At first I was disappointed, because I was told it would stay put on the dash without even having to use the sticky pad that you can peal out at the bottom of the mount, but I found that I just had not positioned the unit correctly on my dash. Now that I experimented with different placement, it stays in place perfect. It never slides around much (even around sharp turns) and I have not had to peal the sticky pad off, hence no marking of my dash. I must say it can be quite difficult to open and fit your device into the mount, however, once you do get it in place, that same difficultly is transformed into your device being very securely and tightly fitted into the mount.I do not use my GPS that often, but when I do, this mount is perfect for my car, it's heavy, secure, and most importantly for me, non-permanent, so it leaves no mark or trace of a GPS device.

OK, but strange design on the bottom ...
Very good idea and does hold whatever you clamp in there securely, but ...The unit has an almost solid bottom which does not conform to the surfaces it *might* sit on.The middle of the bottom is thicker than the outer edges, and then there is this sticky thingy on the edge, which sadly never touches any surface ...no idea what it is good for, that sticky thingy, so a waste of material. That sticky thingy should have been at the thickest part !!However ... ,.The unit is heavy and the bottom does not slide that easy over any surface it might sit on.Now months later ...Not that satisfied anymore. The anti slip feature is gone, and the whole thing slides from one end of the dash to the other with any slight turn of the car !!I now use it at home on my desk. Nice and sturdy !! But not any more what it was intended for !!Oh well ...

Absolutely love it!
Up until now, I have been struggling with a windshield apparatus that has fallen off numerous times and has driven me crazy. Even Super Glue would not hold it for very long. This GPS mount is heavy enough to stay in place on my dash without using the little "sticky" tape on the bottom. I have a new Toyota Corolla and it fits perfectly in the area I like to place it. It might not work as well for some dashboards so you might have to engage the little sticky tape. The "clamp lid" holds my TomTom securely in place. It would also work well for a cell phone. When you place it in the holder, it has three options of the "slant" of the GPS that works best for the driver. When I get to my destination, all I have to do is to pick it up and put it on the floorboard out of sight. When I return to my car, it is easy to pick it up and set it back on my dashboard. Life is full of little stresses and this mount will relieve some of the aggravations involved in driving in heavy traffic.
