Product Description Recorded live at State University of New York on 9/19/71, just six weeks prior to Duane Allmans untimely accidental death, this 2-CD set contains the only known quality live performance of Duane on "Blue Sky", one of the pillars of the Brothers catalog. Review Unlike the Grateful Dead, their obvious and acknowledged model for reissuing vintage live recordings, the Allman Brothers Band has not shied away from exploring their early work in an attempt to demonstrate that they were as good in 1980 and 1990 as they were in 1970. On the contrary, in such archival releases as 1991's Live at Ludlow Garage: 1970 (Polydor), 1996's Fillmore East, February 1970 (Grateful Dead), and the first release from their own Allman Brothers Band Recording Company, 2002's American University 12/13/70, the Allmans have made a point of sticking to their early years when the original band, led by slide guitarist Duane Allman, was still intact. Their purpose, as band members said in a front-page article in Billboard in April 2002 that announced the formation of their record company, is to demonstrate Duane Allman's prowess. This album, recorded a scant five weeks before the guitarist's death, furthers this goal. Annotator John Lynskey acknowledges that, also unlike the Dead, the Allmans did not vary their set list very much. 'The Allman Brothers might have played the same songs night after night' he admits, 'but they were never played the same way twice.' The album, which compiles material from two shows on the same night, backs up his assertion. The titles may be familiar, but the jamming is not, as the band explores different ways to approach the songs, including one that is still in development. 'Blue Sky', which would not appear on record until the group's next album, 'Eat a Peach', gets an 11-minute treatment that is a showcase for Duane Allman and Dickey Betts' guitar interaction. Six months after the legendary shows that produced their signature recording, At Fillmore East, and just before they changed forever with Duane Allman's death, this is the sound of the Allman Brothers Band at their peak. --Allmusic.com Review: A really good choice for an archive release. - I have probably two "bootleg copies" of this previously unreleased live recording. So, that said, I had heard it before. I own all FIVE of the Archive releases. I figured, I need to own them. I have over 200 Allman Brothers Band recordings, so it it was only responsible and reasonable of me to buy the archive releases. And I have been listening to them in order. I was NOT impressed with the other two 1970 archive releases, for the most part. Those recordings were not showcasing the band "smoking" or being "special" in most any way. So I had to take my cat to a vet just outside of town. I popped this live 9/19/71 Stonybrook recording into my cd player. So I am going down I-10 with my cat in a animal carrier. I have to say the performance was rather SMOKING. It was very satisfying. This archive release was MORE than worthy of being showcased. I know that the problem is that the band only has rights or privy to so many recordings. Or I guess this is the case. The first two archive releases were simply good or ok. Nothing on those discs really EXCITED me. The difference is that this live Stonybrook show made me want to get down and PARTAY if you know what I mean. And the only real problem that I have is with the SOUND. The sound is not so great. Skip Littlewood a fan of the band "remastered" many shows and probably this one too. The sound is rather pedestrian. It isn't very good overall. I just wonder why a better quality audio of this show wasn't released. Skip is dead now but if his audio is a lot better than why not release his remaster? And there are many so called audiophiles out there tinkering with the old shows. I'm not saying the people behind the releases should be blamed for anything but there may have been a "remaster" of this show that was more worthy of being released. Skip Littlewood is dead now. He just passed away, but was this the best audio that was available??? I mean, this was a smoking hot show and it had one of the three existing version of BLUE SKY by Dickey Betts. So I give this an A+ for musicianship and a B+ or and A- for sound. The real issue here is only the sound. Gregg and Duane and the band were totally into this show. And Duane mentioned how they'ed probably be back next year. Duane didn't know he only had a little more that two months to live. Anyway, this is a GREAT ABB show. A real fan needs to own this in some form. Review: ANY DUANE IS GOOD DUANE - What an absolute gem. You know the music is good when you get goosebumps and the hair stands up on the back of your neck - this will do it for you - especially BlueSky - prolly the first time it was performed live. It is totally unedited so you get an other-worldly feeling that you are in the audience at Stonybrook. While Fillmore East is a masterpiece, it is also highly edited so you dont get alot of Duane`s banter between songs or guys tuning their instruments and thus the feeling of `being there` is somewhat lost. Even the flubbed rhythm sequence in Stormy Monday is OK cause it`s real. I will take REAL music with all its warts instead of overdubbed crap any day. I want music from the soul not synthesized notes generated from an editing machine..... Stonybrook delivers big time. In the liner notes the technicians apologize for the sound quality of the CD since the original tape deteriorated a little over the years. No apology is necessary man. What you guys have done is allowed music lovers one more rare listen to one of the greatest bands ever... and right at their peak. If you guys are sitting on anything remotely as good as this PLEASE go ahead and let the music live on again! I was always a sort of casual ABB fan even after wearing out my sister`s Fillmore East LP back in the 70s. But just recently I have been researching the band heavily - especially Duane - and now I have a newfound appreciation of just how talented these guys were at blending blues, jazz, and rock. BTW, if you havent read Skydog the biography go ahead and get a copy. It is one of the best books I ever read on any subject and especially gives you insight into the music industry back in the glory days. You know, I was sitting in my backyard just starting to read this book one day this summer, and after about the first chapter or two I look up and there is a most beautiful rainbow reaching across the sky. Right then and there I knew it was Duane making it happen. He was an incredibly beautiful human being and a genius when you get right down to it. Anyway, get this CD... you wont be dissapointed.

Better then "Fillmore"
Great show during the peak of creativity from one of the greatest jam bands of all time. If you dont want to hear 10 minutes of guitar solos get "Live at the Fillmore," but if you want to hear duane during his peak (a month from his death) this is what you need. The entire band seems to be playing even better than on "Fillmore" including Dicky Betts, who plays some interesting (almost Duane-like) solos. The live version of Betts' "Blue Sky" is almost worth the price alone but throw in a great "Stormy Monday," an extended "You Dont Love Me," (In which Duane and Dicky trade licks), and the best live version of "Dreams" and you have an album equal to "Fillmore." Now obviously the sound quality is not great (especially on the first 5 tracks, which I believe were recorded live earlier that day) because it is a bootleg, but as the album goes on the sound improves as does the playing. Even with the sound quality being what it is, this is the perfect album if you want to hear the band jam one last time with Duane.

The second and last of the ones with Duane Allman of the Allman Brothers Brand. This recording on 19th September was only 6 weeks before his tragic death on 29th October, and the last live recording that I am aware of. Absolutely essential and the band give their usual fantastic performance. Main problem with this is the quality of the recording, particularly at the start of the show - it gradually improves so that it becomes fine. First CD 75 minutes of great show, second CD is short - only 39 minutes composed of two tracks: "Dreams" and "In Memory of Elizabeth Reid", both show the band at the top of their ability. The recording glitches mentioned above bothered the band throughout as can be heard on the tape. Although I should down grade the 5* rating due to the recording problems, the main thing is the bands performance - quite superb, and unmissable. He will (as will Berry Oakley) be sorely missed. A very great band destroyed by bad luck.

Great set list but the sound quality is almost bootleg quality, which is really too bad, as this, the original Allman Brothers line up, was definitely the best incarnation of the band.
