Following up on the enormous success of her Trilectic release from 2000, Jewlia Eisenberg has again fashioned a remarkable program of a cappella vocal and instrumental music on socio-political themes, themes that Jews think about, maybe even obsess about, from genocide and the nature of evil to freedom under extreme restraints and the response of art to all of these conditions. Influences as varied as eastern European folk, contemporary classical, hard rock, jazz, gypsy and Jewish music mesh seamlessly in Jewlia's boldly original compositional voice. Featuring her all-star band, Charming Hostess, Sarajevo Blues is an exciting new release by one of the most prolific and creative women working in new music today.

To much singing
I didn't care for this album because it was more about singing than instrumental elements. The beatboxing was not very good nor was it a good touch. The lyrics were boring (the ones in english) and it was just really annoying. People who like folk or jewish music stuff like that then mabey you would like this. All though I do like massada witch is jewish music ((klesmer) I am sure its the wrong spelling)) this cd I did not like. Execpt songs 1,2 and one of the latter tracks.

Three strong, soaring women's voices
Charming Hostess have moved from Walter Benjamin to the poetry of Sem Mehmedinovic, written during the siege of Sarajevo. Their ability to capture the essence of Mehmedinovic's poetry and then make the songs _rock_ is amazing. Also included on the album are some traditional Jewish Ladino songs from Bosnia, a Yiddish poem by Celia Dropkin translated into and sung in Hebrew, and a wonderful Arabic traditional song, Aish Y'Kdish. The music reminds me of a Balkan "Sweet Honey in the Rock" or what "Zap Mama" might sound like if they were exploring the Balkans and the Middle East, but still weren't giving away their African song roots. Amazing.
