DW Drum Workshop SM770 Bass Drum Mounted Cymbal Arm w/L-Arm & Bracket

Heavy Duty
I first bought the Ludwig bass drum mount and immediately saw that I was just not going to be able to trust it with anything heavier than a splash cymbal. So, plunk down the bucks for the DW model and yes, this is what I want. Thicker L-arm and a serious memory lock. This might be my first DW cymbal stand? Maybe - because I was pleasantly surprised to see the wing nut and felt are one piece - interesting. All the other little bits of this stand are super-engineered to work well for a long time. Almost as heavy as a single cymbal stand :-) but will save on stage real estate. Cool.

Solid as a rock and heavy duty
After specifying the Gibraltar SC-GBDCA Bass Drum Mounted Cymbal Arm on two custom built drum kits I grew tired of that model's propensity to lean to because of the smaller contact area on the L-arm inside of the bracket. So, when I decided to add a shell mounted assembly to my Gretsch 4pc Catalina Club Jazz Shell Pack I decided to spring for the extra bucks and get the this one. What I liked: this is a heavy duty assembly, down to the clamping bracket that mounts to the shell. Once the L-arm is inserted and tightened, it is not going to budge. That, alone, beats the Gibraltar model, and is a quantum leap from the original arm that is on my 1961 Slingerland kit! The memory lock on this assembly is also first class. DW pays attention to detail to the point of over-engineering.What I did not like: Another reviewer stated his bass drum shell was too thick for the mounting screws. Not true - those mounting screws were too short. In fact, they appeared to be designed to go through a metal snare drum shell instead of a wood bass drum, and even if the bass drum were a flimsy three ply the screws would have been too short. I rectified the issue in the same manner as the reviewer by making a quick trip to a hardware store.Despite the inconvenience of the wrong size screws that are packaged with the assembly, this is a major improvement over the Gibraltar model and is worth the premium price. Saving a few bucks only to be constantly worrying about your cymbal falling over is not a good tradeoff.

Finally a bass mount cymbal holder that doesn't fall over
I'm refurbishing two of my old kits and wanted to have the classic bass mounted ride cymbal holder as I used to have in the 80s as well as one to hold a splash cymbal.I originally bought the Ludwig bass cymbal mount which is basically the same as the ones in the 60's with a locking mechanism on it, but even with that they lean like they did back then with a ride cymbal on them.I started searching for better ( things had to improve in 40 years... right?) and I came across this one and wow what a difference! (I actually bought two a short one and long one and cut it down)The person who designed this nailed it! It just doesn't move. Looking at the way the locks together is impressive. I did have to buy some 10/24 course thread 1" screws at home depot, as the ones packaged were too short for me, but beyond that these were great out of the package. The only thing I can say negative about this is that they are overkill for a small splash- I used the Ludwig cymbal mounts for that as they were perfect!

Exceptional DW Quality
I had been looking for a Bass Drum Cymbal holder that was nicer than the old Ludwig models and the freely available Gibraltar model. The DW model is top notch. The bass drum I was drilling it into had an unusually thick shell, so the screws included weren't long enough. I found matching screws at Home Depot with no problem, and I noticed that even the screws DW included were very nice quality, not cheap 2 cent screws you might expect. One piece of advice, I guesstimated that the correct placement to screw into the bass drum was about halfway through. Now I am wishing I had mounted it a lot closer to the batter (beater) side of the bass drum. I looked at my friends vintage Rogers set and his mount was mounted very close to the batter side. The only criticism I have is that it might look a little out of place on a vintage style set.

Old School Space Maker!
I've been wanting and needing an SM770 for a long while now! So glad dw decided to re- vamp this legendary and forgotten piece! The majority of drummers from the 40's thru the mid 70's used this type of mount.... Most of my fav's did. I play different configurations of a small set.One setup has three of these... Allowing me NOT to have ANY floor stands(!!!!!!!!!!). Indespensible!
