Would this be able to withstand being used for self defense?

I own one opaque and one clear version of these canes. From the clear one I can see that it is made of laminated wood. I assume the opaque one is the same. The strength of laminated wood compared to one piece wood depends very much on the glue used to bond the materials. The lamination of this cane looks well made and solid. I believe it is not likely to break during the fist few bouts with an assailant who is unarmed or similarly armed. Another good point of this cane is the hook handle is an integral part of the main body. It is not spliced on, therefore will never separate from the main body. Hope my answer helps.

This cane is made of walnut but the finish is black.

Definitely yes. Remove rubber tip and cut the end to your size. Sand the end a little then replace rubber tip. Do not use glue. This is to allow easy replacement of the rubber tip when necessary. I did this to one of my sticks.
