Basic Illustrated Map and Compass (Basic Illustrated Series)

not very clear nor broad
Not a great book, and not good for teaching students the fundamentals. It also has a weird anti-Brunton compass stance, possibly due to the author being friends with the founder of the Silva company. Lots of people need Brunton compasses and used them all the time, but you would not know it from this book. The explanations of UTM, MGRS, declination, etc. were not very useful.

Same problem as all books of this type
This is as good a book as any on the subject but it makes the same as every book I've read on the topic. It starts out very simple and then makes a quantum leap into more difficult material. Like going from 2+2 to algebra in the turn of a page.Despite attempts to simplify material like this the only real way to learn it is to practice it with someone who knows what they're doing. And then practice, practice, practice on your own.

Good book to brush up on skills...
I'm about 1/2 way through this book. A good book to brush up on skills... I've been out of working with maps for some time, this was a great way to get a refresher on things. It's written well, such that a beginner would benefit having this book on their bookshelf.

Not enough detail
Not enough detail, I need things over-simplified in order for me to understand.

Looking for adventure?
I enjoyed this book as the way it approaches and presents the topic at hand. Being already familiar with navigation I can say this book can and will help many people. Good job on this book.

Concise and to the point as Cliff Jacobson does so well.
If you only wanted to read one book on how to read a map and use a compass, I would read this book. It gives you all you need if you are a weekend camper or canoer. Cliff is to the point and I found his advice very good. I liked his advice on what compass to buy. You don't need the most expensive professional compass out there.
