Full of knowing references, but maybe not for everyone...
This was the first issue of the boys I saw in a book shop. As someone who grew up reading the comics of DC. Thomson, the cover alone was enough to make me laugh. I've worked my way through the series until I got to this one, and have found the road bumpy - some of the books are among the best graphic novels I've read - others come across as filler.I read this one with a huge smile. Like the Frenchman's back story, this is outlandish stereotype pushed to the absolute extreme. Hughie's dad bears a striking resemblance to the dad of 'Oor Wullie'. His mother appears to be an amalgam of Wullie's mum and Daphne from 'The Broons'. We even have a mad character breaking the fourth wall very much in the style of characters from 'The Beano' and 'The Dandy'.The only criticism I can offer it that Hughie's self-analysis gets a bit tiring. However, the story moves along, and we're left with a nice twist. Most likely, for people who don't have the background of Scottish children's comics, the references and gags will fly by unnoticed. For me, they were bang on target and provided a great background - very much in the style of trying to place the characters in 'The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen'.It's not perfect, but I enjoyed it so much I'd feel mean just giving it four stars.

Wise up.
Can't believe this book is getting the reviews it's got? Never heard of the calm before the storm? And I certainly can't believe the rubbish being said about the art? (Shaking my head) Yeah, beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but to rubbish a great artist is pathetic. It's called style, it may not be to your liking, but you don't have to bad mouth it. Artists move on, get over it.Maybe you have to be Scottish to appreciate the patter in it, maybe you don't?I nearly never bought this because of the negativity of the reviews, thank god I ignored them. This is a good read and it's funny. So there's no big fights in it, so what, doesn't make it a bad book.If you like The Boys, buy it. If you can't handle the art or story, meh, your loss.

Hugespotting in Scotland
This album is all about Hugh. We go to Scotland, get some serious trainspotting vibes, and English letter boxes that are slightly hard to understand but it kind of delivers the idea that the accents are thick and you would really need to breath Scotland to understand it. I don't how Scottish would take the story and the dialogue. To me it felt goodwilled, and the storyline itself was kind of uplifting compared to the previous albums in the series. The unique landscape drawn here really sets the tone.

Essential purchase for Boys collectors, otherwise avoid
I'd start by saying this is probably the low point of the series so far for me. The four star review is a measure of how highly I rate The Boys (The other volumes are five stars for me). Here we see Wee Hughie has gone back to Scotland fed up with the crazy life of being a member of The Boys. TBH I wasn't a big fan of the new characters introduced here and the story at first seems completely removed from the series so far; but fear not, half way through the book it starts to tie back into the story and has some pretty big revelations by the end. The artwork by John McCrea is great but doesn't really fit well with the rest of the series, Hughie looks pretty different and that's off-putting at first, almost like watching a film sequel where the original characters are played by different actors. The Boys is an excellent series and this was an essential purchase for me. Its not a bad book by any stretch of the imagination, just a little more low-key than the series so far and with no Billy Butcher. Roll on The Boys vol 9!

Not just for the boys
Each instalment of this series leaves you wanting more, looking forward to re-reading this over a long weekend in the summer sun.believable characters is the key to the story, once you suspend you disbelief to include supes in your world you really can't expect the reader to then buy into unrealistic characters as well or ridiculous plot driving events just to get to the money shot.

Meandering
Highland Laddie almost seems to be intended as the polar opposite to Herogasm, which was brimming with over the top sex, violence and general depravity. In contrast there is very little here. That's not a complaint, but it does wear a little thin over the course of the whole book with little going on but Hughie's unrelenting self analysis and a few mildly entertaining riffs on the Famous Five/Hardy Boys. With the exception of one (admittedly good) twist at the end, not a great deal seems to change over the course of this miniseries and very little of consequence actually happens. For a piece that is primarily focused on characterisation it doesn't quite seem to work. That said however it is still worth a read- the dialogue is well written and the artwork as always is excellent, but I do feel that this is still one of the weaker entries in the series.

Briliant
I have the whole series. Garth Ennis is brilliant. The art-work is brilliant. I would definitely recommend it to everyone who likes reading graphic novels
