Arcade Spinner for Arcade1Up

This is the best! Feels just like the old arcade now. So much so it pisses me off the exact same way. It can be adjusted, but it comes feeling exactly like it did and I will leave it. Super easy to install with clear instructions for doing so. I installed on the 4 in 1 cab and it works great out of box.

I bought this, and the 12 in 1 interface board which you need on the 12 in 1 to connect both the spinner and trackball at the same time, after seeing it on Glen's Retro Show on YouTube. All I can say is if you like Tempest and Major Havoc and want to play them on your Arcade 1Up Asteroids, 12 in 1 or 6 in 1 cabinets like they were meant to be played, BUY IT! There isn't much I can say here that virtually all the other five star reviews haven't already said. Reiterating some, it is a first rate arcade quality spinner, complete with everything you need to install (except some of your time - NOT MUCH and a phillips screwdriver), instructions are with it as are the URL for Glen's Retro Show YouTube videos on it too and the 12 in 1 interface board for review and installation, if you would rather watch than read. It has a small spacer to make up for the control panel protector thickness - if you have one. There are no wires to cut, solder or modify, just plug and play. This is a high quality smooth spinning spinner of which , honestly, the only one that is better is on the original Atari Tempest Arcade Coin-Op. (I know, I own one of those too.) This will make playing Tempest like it should have been from the start. This was so little cost even for both it and the interface board Arcade 1 Up likely could have / should certainly have done this themselves to begin with and likely their sales would have been even higher. JUST BUY THIS, INSTALL IT AND ENJOY THE GAMES INSTEAD OF GETTING UPSET AND FRUSTRATED WITH THE "UN-SPINNER" THAT CAME WITH THE MACHINE.

I am extremely happy with this spinner. It is extremely smooth and has several options for configuring the number of output pulses per revolution (up to 1024). Surprisingly, I didn't see a standard optical encoder wheel and it looks like it might use a magnet in the shaft along with a chip I can't identify right behind the shaft. The included knob fits precisely on the shaft and has a good weight to it. Overall the entire unit is extremely well designed. I'm planning on building a custom USB spinner controller for my PC to play Tempest and so far it has been pretty straightforward. The 4-pin connector pinout is labeled nicely for DIYers and the module takes 5V supply. It interfaced with an Arduino very easily using the UART at 125000 baud, 7N1 settings. I couldn't find any real authoritative information about the comms protocol (and found some contradicting stuff) but I got this working reliably for me. My working prototype just feels so good controlling the Tempest claw! Also, the packaging it comes in is great for holding the spinner while experimenting with it on my desk.

It’s rare when a product is good enough for me to write a review. In this case, it’s absolutely good enough. I was skeptical and the spinner was better than expected! I bought an Arcade1Up unit that has Tempest and other games included. The factory spinner is simply worthless. It hardly spins and is complete plastic. I felt like I wasted my money on the cabinet! After researching aftermarket options and watching the YouTube video for this, I snagged one. It was easy to install with the video instructions and worked perfectly. It’s heavy, like I expected an arcade spinner to feel! Adjustable speed control and the fact that the grips are notched make it perfectly comfortable to play. Worth every penny!

This was perfect to use for my DIY arcade machine. I had to purchase the 12-in-1 control board for it to make it recognized as a USB mouse (you do not need this if you are replacing the spinner in an Arcade1up machine...only if you're converting it to usb for other types of setups). In that mode, it only has mouse x-axis, but that's all the spinner needs to work. I also had to crank the sensitivity up to max on the spinner's control board, but there are dip switches to do that and instructions showing the settings for each switch. For my setup, I basically just cranked the sensitivity up to maximum (all dip switches in ON position) and it works like a champ. Took only about 30 minutes to install and fiddle with configurations to get it working. The spinner itself also feels very solid. It's made of aluminum, with knurling around the circumference of the spinner, so it's got a fantastic feel and weight.

I purchased the GRS spinner after I scooped up the Asteroids partycade and unfortunately the spinner only spins in one direction. There have been some other reports of the same issue. It appears to be the pcb that's on the partycade which is labeled "trackball" and is where the stock spinner was plugged into. But I still think it's an awesome product for it's build quality and hey! It spun great in one direction, better than the stock. I'm keeping it for a future mod. Hopefully there's a fix for the partycade. Game On my friends!

If you have an Arcade 1up asteroids or 12 in 1 this spinner is a must! Huge improvement over the Arcade 1up spinner. This spinner spins freely just like a arcade spinner. Also super easy to install because it was designed specifically to replace the arcade 1up spinner. If you have a 12 in 1 you will need a interface board to install unless you get the grs trackball. With the grs trackball you just plug the spinner into the trackball and you are good to go. Also works great with the raspberry pi 3B plus which is what I am using it with. The spinner comes with a silver top. You can buy a red, blue or black replacement top. I’m using the blue.
