Q: Does this version come with a cloth bag for the pieces, or just the box?

It has a kinda cloth-vinyl zipper bag. Personally I tossed the game insert and just keep the pieces in the bag inside the box. On the go I just take the bag, on my shelf the box looks nicer and stacks easily.

Q: what does the ladybug piece do?

"The Ladybug moves three spaces; two on top of the Hive, then one down. It must move exactly two on top of the Hive and then move one down on its last move. It may not move around the outside of the hive and may not end its movement on top of the Hive. Even though it cannot block by landing on top of other pieces like the beetle, it can move into or out of surrounded spaces. It also has the advantage of being much faster." (From the Instruction Manual.)

Q: How long does your typical game play last with an average player?

I agree with others, depends on levels of the players. My high school kids can take anywhere from 5-45 minutes depending on what strategies and how well they can play. 2 novices probably about 5-10 minutes or experts can take anywhere from 5 minutes to almost an hour if they are working on blocking. There is also a version that does not use the mosquito and ladybug. Some of them like to use them and others take them out of the play. That can affect how long the game takes to play too.
