Quite a powerful upgrade
For many years i've been stuck in a never ending loop of AMD processors from the Athlon 3000+, to a Sempron SI-42, then to a Turion II M540. The last time i've owned an Intel based machine was back in 2000 with the Compaq presario 5000, which had a 600 MHz Celeron. Needless to say I've been long overdue for an upgrade, and boy have i found one. PerformanceTest gives The Turion II M540 a score of around 1400, but the Core i5 4670 reaches 8000. This is a decent jump in total processing power. It may not have the fancy hyper threading of the Core i7, and it may not have the unlocked multiplier of the 4670K, but it's been suiting my needs just fine. It can handle foreground multitasking quite well in all tests that i've thrown at it. This includes running a game, 1080p video, and YouTube vids all at the same time. I'd also like to point out that this processor also handles Fraps extremely well if you plan on building a budget gaming PC for doing Let's Plays on. Just remember to use a separate and dedicated hard drive for recording for the best frame rates. Good Processor
I opted for the slightly higher clock speeds of the 4670. After running it pretty hard I only have a couple observations about the temperatures. With all four cores loaded and stock cooler, the temperatures can get up to 70 C. If you are just doing light work with your computer, the stock cooler is adequate. However, if you plan on running the processor at high load on 2-4 cores for extended periods, you should also plan on getting an aftermarket cooler. This is especially true if you have other heat sources (GPU) or higher ambient temperatures. Keeping your processor closer the 50 C than 70 C should also help it last longer. Also, I noticed a difference in temp between the processor cores. Cores 1 and 2 report the high temps, fairly close with core 1 being the hottest. Core 3 can be around 5 C cooler, and core 4 up to 10 C cooler compared to core 1. This is at full load on all cores, with idle temp differences being less pronounced. When core 1 is not loaded, the temps are closer but still different. When I replaced the stock cooler with a better one, all temps went down but the difference was still there. From searching I have concluded that this is not too concerning. Differences in locations of the cores and their sensors can account for this. Since a 10C difference is a lot, but still plausible, I think it is fine, especially since a new cooler didn't change it. More significant differences could indicate a sensor, hardware, or cooling issue. I think high (~70C) temps with the stock cooler are more concerning than this temp difference.

Can't go worng with Intel processors
How many people actually use their machine to their full - very few I'd guess. Now, of course, if you're programming for NASA and trying to use it in space rockets or some such, I'm not going to say it will work flawlessly. But for day to day tasks, you'll have no issues. Multi-tasking - no problem. Playing games - no problem. Surfing, emailing, writing documents, etc - all no problem. You'll be able to play the best games on high or highest settings as it won't be the processor that restricts your play but rather your graphics card, Since I built my machine almost a year ago - I've not had any issue with the processor causing a blue screen of death or anything else. It runs effortlessly. Note that it does get hot and so an effective heatsink and paste is required - as is case cooling - to dissipate the heat. Although the stock cooler may work, I generally use an aftermarket one (in this instance I used a Zalman CNPS9500A LED) and, as I said, I've never any issues. If it does what it says - then that's all you can ask.

Fortunately, we didn't need it
The CPU appears to work well. However, according to the computer guy who installed it, the fan sent with it didn't match the CPU . Since the y were sent in an i7 box, I suspect the fan (which was unused) was a match for an i7 CPU. Fortunately, we didn't need it, so we were OK.

It is fine... but a little warm.
Got this for a decent price (not amazing but good enough since shipping was free). Pulled an i7-4770k (doing the turbo-dance up to 3.9GHz) and put this in. Temps (under load) went up 10C. Pulled another i5-4670 from another rig put it in. Temps drop >10C. Normally I'd pull the lid off the chip, repaste it, and watch temps normalize (I don't recommend anyone take the lid off a chip unless you know what you're doing) and I'd wager most users wouldn't have even noticed an issue. But I'm definitely a little OCD so I used Amazon's amazing return policy and sent it back. I actually meant to do an exchange but did a refund by mistake. No biggy, when two days later I saw Amazon had refunded me I picked up an i7-4770k for the same price. If you get a good deal on the chip (say less than $200) there is nothing wrong with these chips in general. I got a less than perfect (but still workable) one and Amazon made it right. However you can find the upgrade chips (i7-4770k) for ~$230-$260 on sale now and then and in at least my case pick one up for $200 w/ free shipping. I wish Amazon would price match that because their return policy and Prime have earned my loyalty.

Worked great for my hackintosh. Should have waited for a sale and gone with the 4670K.
I bought this at $219, though the week after it went to $209 and I got the difference refunded so the pricing was good. It looks like now the price is dropping even further, however. I believe a day or so after I installed mine I saw the 4670K drop to the same $219, and the overclocker hiding inside me is disappointed that I did not wait. I needed a new computer though as my old motherboard croaked after 5 years so I had no reason to be too picky. If you plan to build a hackintosh then definitely go with one of these series! It was a simple process that involved little tweaking. I paired mine with a Gigabyte LGA 1150 Intel Z87 but I know there are other options as well.

learn how to make a heatsink
I'm sure the processor itself works fine. I'll figure that out after I buy a new heat sink and fan and install it because the Intel one is a worthless piece of junk. I've built dozens of computers in my life, never encountered one this bad before. Can't even get it to actually mount on the processor and lock in place. If the processor wasn't a couple of hundred dollars maybe I could cut them a brake. But it was, so no.
